The NAP 300

Chaps

After reading Fredrik Frisk's very eloquent write up of the NAP 300, I decided to take the plunge and go for one.

I sold the 135s yesterday and fortunately for me, the NAP 300 was installed just after lunch today.

So what is it like. The answer in a short sentence is bloody awesome and that is straight from cold.

In fact to illustrate how good it is, Mrs Mick accused me of being a "tight fisted old sod" for not buying the NAP 500. This is the first time she has moaned about me not spending enough on Hifi equipment, so you can draw your own conclusions from that.

I must admit I am sorely tempted to buy a 500 and put the 300 into the dining room system.

I have a pair of Briks which now seem to have come totally alive with the 300, it has transformed the system completely. It commands the music much more effortlessly and is just so much better.

You should definately put this one down on your "pressie to yourself" list.

Regards

A very happy Mick

Mick,

Congrats on buying the 300. It really is a stunning piece of kit. I would say that it is probably the best value for money amp that Naim do at the moment.

Wow Mick, that's amazing, well done! But does your other half know how much a 500 costs, and that it's THREE TIMES the price??!!!

The 300 is definitely on my list for the future, but I'm afraid we're talking 'long term', ie. once I'm financially in a position to get a 252 to go with it. Given that I'm only on 'bottom-of-the-rung' 5-series gear right now, that won't be for some time!

Happy listening.

Thank you for your kind words, but the 300 is truely amazing.

"I wish you all the best and looking forward reading Mr. Pig's amo...comments."

The ramblings of plebs serve only to amuse.

I will take some notice of him when he buys the ECSs he reckons are so great.

Now, wouldn't that be a Mullet system ?

True, so perhaps the 32.5 could be moved into the bedroom.

What does your main system consist of now Mick ?

Your profile is a little out of date I think.

Not a lad any longer and not from London!

Great news Mick, glad it sounds great even from cold. You only have pleasurable listening experiences to look forward to.

Sean.

P.S. You are a tight fisted sod for not buying the 500........you know it makes sence!

Nice one, Mick

I heard 250/2>300>500 at Bristol last year; the big jump was from 250/2 to 300. The 500 was better, but in my opinion not THAT much better - having said that, an hotel room is not the place to get an ideal dem.

Whats the going price on 300s?

Mike

In my opinion -

"I heard 250/2>300>500 at Bristol last year"

the big jump for me was from the 300 to the 500, the 500 gave a full sound with reasonable bass detail - the other two amps limited the sound - but it is a case of knowing what your "ground zero" of sound is. At the time my ground zero was a 500 hence a 300 would sound deficient to me.

Just readjusting my ground zero at the moment to include a pair WB Chimeras (on loan only) so I am expecting a deficit when I go below ground when they are repatriated.

Derek,

Looking forward to a full review of those Chimera's shortly!

I hope that Dave Antonelli will do the words - he came over for a listen to the system

In my simple words they give bass on demand - ie when deep bass is needed they give it - when it is not needed they are quiet.

They do sound rather fine.

I have heard the NAP500 but not the 300.

I will be honest and admit that Fredriks appraisal got me going as it were.

I had the chrome bumper 135s which had been recapped with new transformers so they were as good as new. I chose the chrome bumpers as they have a more mellow sound than the olive ones.

They were excellent power amps and drove the Briks well and I could comfortably have lived with them for the rest of my life.

Having said that, the new reference series, in my opinion at least, seems to do what the old Naim stuff did but also does it better.

The CDS3 was a huge leap from the CDS2 and hence I took the gammble with the 300 based on Fredrik's comments and it has paid off enormously.

Buying the 300 gives a fantastic uplift over the 135s and the system just oozes better quality music which I never thought possible. The cash difference between the 500 and the 300 could release funds for a 552.

I retired last month and expected to be spending more time at home and that was also a reason for the upgrade.

As it so happens, since retiring my phone has not stopped ringing with job offers and last week the lure of all that extra lolly tempted me back and I am starting a locum with a Swindon company next week.

So paradoxically, I now have a better system and less time to listen to it.

To sum up, the 300 is a superb product and I have no hesistation in recommending it.

Regards

Mick

Mick

congrats on your new acquisition, as well as the fine start to your retirement. I couldn't see you just putting your feet up and admiring the gold watch - just be sure you get to enjoy the time out as well! Semi-retired (by choice) has a nice ring to it.

I have just given the 300 another go with some Jazz CDs and it is breathtaking.

This is one hell of an amp.

How did you decide to wire up the speakers?

Mick,

In a previous thread you once stated that the biggest up-grade you have made was the XPS, would you now revise this?

I said that a long time ago.

I would list the best increase in sound in the following order

Best ever Going from CDS2 to CDS3

2nd best Going from 135s to 300

3rd best Adding XPS onto CDX
