connecting two pcs via USB, how?

Is it possible?
How will each other knows what is on the other side?

I can connect my laptop to my PC using a USB cable, but I run some "Laplink" software which uses an "Explorer" style interface and enables me to copy information from one computer to the other.

I don't know if Microsft XP has something built in...... I seem to recall seeing something about conecting PC's if they are both running XP

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......
