NBL Surgery

Posted by: Chris Bell on 10 December 2000

Hello All,

One of my NBL tweeters went out last week (probably from cranking MEGADEATH) and the Naim surgeon came over to save the day. Interestingly, the tweeters came a match pair: I am curious why they come as a match pair and how they match them? Also when we pulled out the old tweeters the sodered leads were sealed in "hot glue". Acording to NANA, the hot glue prevents air leaks from the back of the tweeter. Who knew? Each tweeeter also came premounted to its own spring face and had to be ca refully installed so it had the propper "spring tention" to it. The whole instalation process took about 45 minutes and the system has never sounded better! Not sure what caused the tweeter to go, but I am greatfull that it was covered under my warranty. Many thanks to Conan at Hawthorne Stereo Seattle (pictured) and to NANA for quickly shipping the tweeters out.

Also, I have a Supercap on demo for my Snaxo 3-6. It is perhaps the most incredible upgrade I have ever listened to! The hi-cap was sque ezing the life out of the music. If anyone thought a Naim system could not image and have a huge sound stage, go listen to an active six pack--its both flat and round at the same time! I am truly impressed.

Hi Cliff,

Yes I too wonder about how the NAP500 would compare to my six pack....My dealer should be getting their store demo soon and I will do the comparison.(They are very curious as well) The nice advantage of active systems is the ability to tweak the SNAXO, although since the supercap was installed the EQ has remained at the factory settings and is sounding great. (Even those CDs I thought were total shit are totally involving now...I guess I finally get to hear what the CDS 2 is capable of.)

Chris,

I have found that any adjustment of the NAXO away from the standard settings just don't work.

cheers, Martin

Standard settings... I wish. I have active IBL's & have to use a SNAXO 2/4 designed, I guess for SBL's.

I set the bass to maximum & then cut the treble until it sounds about right. It took me about a week until I was totally happy. I then replaced the sleeve case & it sounded rather flat & a bit shut in by comparison to the 'naked' case. I now use my SNAXO naked.

I remember the late JV saying how he once spent the best part of a morning tweaking his SNAXO to get the IBL's in his office to sound right. Mine you when they are right.... pure magic.

Bob.
