Any good manuals for Adobe PhotoShop

Posted by: David Hobbs-Mallyon on 26 October 2004

It's a while since I've bought any technical manuals with titles like 'Learn MS Access in 24 hours'. On the whole, I always found them pretty useless - lots of information straight from the manuals - not alot of practical advice. Hopefully the situation has changed in the last 5 years or so.

So, any recommendations on manuals, internet sites, magazines for Adobe PhotoShop which will take me through all the key functionality step-by-step?

Cheers

Hi David

I used the Photoshop Bible myself, which was fairly comprehensive, but then again, after a while, I just started experimenting, & got on without it Smile

PS - Just found this web page in my Bookmarks - fairly comprehensive, but I haven't spent much time reviewing it yet. May be worth a quick look though.

I have found

"The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby published by New Riders to be quite useful.

It is more of a cook book than a reference manual

I can only speak for photography related usage, and I don't have a recommendation for an absolute beginner's book, but my two favourites are:

-- Bruce Fraser's "Real World Photoshop" is my favourite general book. The latest version (I have RWPS6) is here

-- "Photoshop Artistry" has a more case study/worked examples approach rather than a "here's how this feature works" approach and is excellent. See here (Although again I only have the PS6 version not the PSCS version)

For completeness sake I should also mention Dan Margolis's "Professional Photoshop : The Classic Guide to Colour Correction" which is fantastic and unique but best avoided until you are comfdrtable with more, erm, conventional approaches. His chapter on how to do coor correction even if you are colour blind is essential though -- see http://www.ledet.com/margulis/PP7_Ch02_ByTheNumbers.pdf

PS I beleive that one of our posters, Tim Danaher, is somethign of a PS expert.
