Favourite Comedian

Tonight I nearly pissed my pants laughing to Armando Iannucci on the radio (the 99p show)
I have enjoyed everything he has been associated with (more or less).
The absurdist wordplay tickles me, like 'A Bit of Fry & Laurie' used to.
More thoughts...?

OTT - Will & Grace

From a long lost age I reckon that Kenneth Williams when he played one half of Julian and Sandy with Hugh Paddick on the Sunday afternoon radio show Round The Horne takes some beating. I'm sure most of the listeners had no idea just Julian and Sandy were on about for if they did they may have been a bit shocked.

Goons and Richard Pryor. Have a soft spot for the Young Ones, but don't think they qualify as 'comedians'.

Original 70s Billy Connolly. Accept no substitutes, IMHO the funniest man on the planet.

Hicks
Also John Sessions. I thought he was pretty good.

Bill Hicks reigned supreme.
The best stand up I have ever seen though was Bill Bailey. I wasn't expecting him to be so good but he was.
Have a soft spot for Lee and Herring. They avoided the cliches of stand up or sent them up ruthlessly.
As an aside, I saw Peter Kaye's stand up on C4 the other night and my god it was poor.

The Go on Show as the link man first called it, and Billy Connolly do it for me. MPFC had a few classics as did Basil F.

Yet another vote for Bill Hicks, his biography is well worth reading, too.

Earlyish Eddie Izzard, Emo Phillips, Jimmy Carr, Jeff Green.
Also, quite like my mate Mike Milligan (Geordie comic).

The Parry/Robinson double act takes a lot of beating, Shame they've all but retired now.

Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Tommy Cooper, Benny Hill, kennenth Williams and Ken Dodd.
None of whom had to resort to foul/abusive language in order to raise a laugh.

Sid James, hyuk hyuk
But also: Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks; for musical comedy, Bill Bailey and the brilliant Mitch Benn; for comedy acting, Steve Coogan (only as Partridge/Calf) and Ronnie Barker.
I went to see Bernard Manning live once, out of curiosity. He was deeply offensive but fucking funny. Work that one out. And before anyone starts having a go, I've never made any claims for moral perfection or ideological purity. Plus I stil think Jim Davidson's crap.
