Getting Radio 4 broadcasts into iTunes...

Posted by: Top Cat on 28 September 2004

Hi folks.

I'd quite like to get the new series of HHGTTG into iTunes in an AAC or MP3 format so that I can listen to them on my forthcoming iPod. Also there was a Jeff Buckley documentary on R2 last Saturday that I forgot was on and would also like to pop on the 'pod.

Does anyone know how one can extract the 'listen again' stuff into MP3 or AAC format for subsequent listening pleasure?

I fully intend to buy the new HHGTTG cd when it's out (to go with my current one) but I can't wait... Wink

I use Audiohijack - it can record any audio stream (so you can rip audio off music DVDs too), will record AAC and load the recording into iTunes!

I'm doing exactly the same as you with HHgTTG Cool

SPlendid! Did you go for Hijack or Hijack Pro. Did you remember that I had defected to OSX, or was that just a happy coincidence?

I've a couple of DVD Audio discs I had to buy (a Zappa one which is only on DVD-A) which I haven't really had much of a chance to listen to yet, so ripping that would be great!

JetAudiowill also record the BBCs listen again onto your hard disc. The basic version is free.

I've never ripped the audio from a DVD but if you go to www.doom9.net and have a poke around their download section I'm sure you could find something there.

I knew you were a man of taste. I'm using Pro - isn't that the one with AAC? Anyhow, there's a demo and it's cheap.
Big Grin

Jez, if you know of a free DVD ripper that will rip to QT/AVI/MP3 let me know! I can't even find one for windows...

Like I said, it's not something I have ever done myself. www.doom9.org has more rippers/tools that you can shake a stick at. I'm told that the combination of bsweet, dvd2avi, and sound forge will do all you need.

Thanks Jez, I have been thinking about this for a while as there is so much on the BBC Listen Again site I needed a way to get it onto my minidisc player. JetAudio worked a treat it is just a shame it only records in real-time.

It worked well though and the quality was fantastic considering it was just on an old laptop.

Thanks again

I agree Andy, it would be nice to have some sort of "save target as" function so that you could download as fast as your bandwith permits, but I suspect that is not possible with streaming audio. If any one knows different I'd be delighted to know about it. As I understand it, Jet Audio works by recording whatever is sent to your sound card, hence it is necessarily real time, but it does mean that you can record anything being played by the sound card which would otherwise be difficult/impossible to do eg. streaming audio or music from games such as 'FarCry'.

Plenty of DVD 'back up software' for mac Wink

Do any of these rip to avi/QT? Lots of 'back up' freeware (to VOB for burning) available, but none would do this. I looked at about 50 freeware programs - all were VOB only. Some shareware stuff that grabs a few minutes, but nothing I'd want to pay for!

Confused

Does anyone know if you can add these ripped audio files to the list of alert sounds in OS 10.3.5.
In OS versions pre 10.x you could add extra alert sounds of your choosing.
