Nick Cave fans

Rush out and buy Abatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. I think its much better than Nocturama which is pretty crap by his standards. A return to form if not to his best. Non Cave fans could buy it for the lovely packaging.

I also bought Marianne Faithfull's Before The Poison, part written by NC but on first listening thought it rather dull - I'll go and try again.

PS Sorry if this has been done already elsewhere.

I bought this on the strength of a couple of reviews elsewhere, having never bought a Nick Cave album before. I love it, just a couple of duff mmoments but a really good set.

So I second Alex, except it may be worth a splash even if you are not already a fan for the music too. I then went and bought The Boatmans Call, which is good, but different.

Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus is not, IMHO, Nick's best.

It is album in 2 halves: Abattoir Blues is rock and Lyre is mood. The music is good, though Blixa Bargeld's absence is obvious. The lyrics, however, do not stand comparison to much of what has gone before: Nick was a master of the narrative song - this latest effort suggests he is turning into Tori Amos (but it's not that bad yet).
His best full-on CD is "Let Love In" and his best introspective CD is "The Boatman's Call" and his best "fun" CD is "Murder Ballads" all of which I would recommend as first buys rather than Abattoir/Lyre.

cheers

Nigel

Its quite like Let Love In (perhaps my favourite); Plenty of up-tempo growly numbers but interspersed with tuneful ballads. I agree with Nigel that the writing's not his best - I guess Hove is starting to rub off - and would agree that he's listed the three best.

I played Murder Ballads last night - it really is a scream!

hi-fi nerdy note: Let Love In is an excellent test of what your system can and can't do

I bought the 'Best of Nick Cave' as I was always curious about his stuff. At £5.99 I thought it was worth the risk !

I tend to like the more poppier/ballady stuff like ,Nobodys baby now, Into my arms, The ship song, Straight to you. Sheer bliss .

But the likes of, Tupelo, The Carny, From her to eternity etc , just don't do it for me at all.

I've bought 'The boatmans call' as I'm led to believe its more of the former than the latter.

regards,

Rod
