Massive Attack

I've recently become aware of MA via the film Live Forever...what a great, spare sound! What album is their best, or at least the best place to start?

Any of the first three : "Blue Lines", "Protection" or "Mezzanine". Protection is probably the most accessible. Mezzanine is very dark in places but brilliant. I'm not so sure about "100th Window" which I don't think is as strong as the others. And you also must get "No Protection" The Mad Professor's dub version of protection.
At least it's a nice compact discography!

Avoid 100th window, which is formulaic crap

massive attack only wrote one great song and oakenfold tried to ruin it.

others were good.

most were mediocre.

by the way, this has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt so don't even bother getting flustered.

Hey, thanks all for the sound advice (geddit?), I'll be perusing the used album shoppes for some MA, probably Mezzanine. I may be an old dog, but I can still get turned on to new music (even if a decade+ old!). I must say, the Naim Forum inmates are very hip, if that's not a passe term...now, it's time for tea and a biscuit, then bed.

Buy the first 3 albums..

Blue Lines
Protection
Mezzanine

they're all great and all marvellously different from each other. For sheer, high volume headf*ck value you cannot go past Mezzanine.

No protection(massive attack and mad professor) and Mezzanine. Blue lines and Protection are boring imo..

Mezzanine (especially the first four songs) is probably in my top five of all time. When it first came out I didn't like it, but it sort of crept up and now it's one of those albums that had a huge influence.

Speaking of influence - spot the Cure sample and even the occasional nicked Wire lyric...

Such a shame about 100 Windows.

I think all of the first 3 albums are rather uneven but each has some really excellent stuff on it and so they all need to be owned. None come close to Maxinquaye of course!

I agree with Simon Perry. The first three albums are all worth a spin and they have some fantastic tracks but they are rather uneven. I also never really "got" Blue Lines". I find myself trying to distinguish between that and stuff like Rae and Christian and find that I can't.

Maxinequaye is something else though. The one decent album Tricky recorded and a real test of hi-fi at that. Get it.

to sum up... you need them all 'cept 100th window. No home should be without. And while you're putting the order in, a copy of Tricky's Maxinquaye is also essential.

Agreed .Maxinquaye is the most neurotic, stoned , screwed up , sensuous album I ever heard and I simply love it !

And yes I have heard ' There's a riot going on ' by Sly Stone too.
