Fancy going motor-racing?

Apart from the expense, try this for a reason not to do it:

I love motor-racing, but that sort of crash brings home the risks.

Ouch. I can't believe anyone could survive an impact like that.

Agree 100%.

Driver in Porsche survived, but I didn't see anyone get out of the Ferrari. Very sad.

Phew, glad he survived.
I've only ever seen one motor-racing crash that involved fire. A sports racer went off at Druids at Brands, sometime in the mid-eighties. The driver's door was jammed, so he calmly tried the other side. Then wooof, up went the flames. The panic in the driver was terrifying. A couple of seconds later, a typical burly marshall almost yanked the door off the car and helped the driver out. I was almost sick with shock, and never want to see anything like it again.
Hats off to British marshalls.

Having worked at Brands Hatch for about ten years in the 80s and early 90s, I couldn't agree more. They attend regular training, every meeting in the season (often standing all day in filthy weather), all for NO MONEY! I was totally impressed by their knowledge, professionalism, and bravery.
It was a bit different in 1970 however, when as a sixteen year old I sneaked in to watch a bike meeting. We were eventually caught in the pits by the typical pipe-smoking tweed jacket wearing race official of the day. When asked what we were doing my friend said "we're marshalls". Mr Tweedy then took two marshalls' armbands from his pocket and said "You'd better get on the paddock gate then". We enjoyed the day thoroughly, but I nearly got decked by a youthful Phil Reed when I tried to play the jobsworth with him. I still have the old BRMC arm band, which I stole.

What an excellent story, Rockindoc.
I went to spectate a Sunday stage of the RAC rally sometime in the mid-eighties but refused to pay. So me and my mate sneaked through woods and all sorts to get in. Then as we were crossing a clearing a hundred yards or so from the stage, a helicopter appeared above us! It circled just above the trees, and could have been guiding someone to us. Thankfully, both being in the RAF at the time, we were wearing our cam jackets so disappeared into some bushes. How much fuel did that 'copter use?
After that episode, we started info-gathering for the press, so, equipped with passes and car stickers, the world was our lobster! Rally drivers of the eighties? Great bunch.
