My first on line gaming experience
Posted by: garyi on 28 July 2004
I bought Unreal Tournament 2004 at the weekend, according to the gadget show it was only 100FPS on a mac, nevertheless I was utterly slaughtered on the game.
Then I went on line to play there, Wow! How does it run so fast with 10 other players around the world? Very clever stuff. Suffice to say I was slaughtered in about 12 seconds on there, and I was in supposed beginners area.
Great fun though

There's nowt like a good on line shoot 'em up to relieve the stresses of the working day. I started on Quake 2 a few years ago and now play Call of Duty. Never tried UT, but heard good things a while back.
What was your ping gary?

Tim,
Q2 was the business wasn't it? I am going to have to upgrade my machine to cope with Doom 3 and Half Life 2 when they come out.

Q2 was fab. I got so into it that my then dial-up ISP was costing £400 a quarter. I was in [cough] a 'proper' clan that played in the UKCC League. We were called the 'Cat's Arse Association' (cAa for short), and I was called [cAa]grimm.
It sounds crap, but in the context of other Q2 clan names (eg 'Children of Gaia' ) it wasn't too bad:

Tim,
I used to play exclusively CTF in my Q2 days. The maps were amazingly good fun too... Outlands, The Smelter, McKinley's Revival, Stronghold Opposition. Ah, the sound of a rail gun, or someone quading - its all coming back to me now.
I used to play under the not entirely pleasant name of, ahem, Fister.
Some of the players out there were amazing. Were you one of them? I was pretty average.

We were a pretty good clan. Not as good as KiL, but we got up to (IIRC) division 2 at one point. I was good with a railgun, and got a whole lot better when my ping went from 200 to 15 when I had ADSL installed...
We played DM almost exclusively. It was really sociable and we'd all have big chats in between slaughtering each other with depleted uranium.
I'm getting all nostalgic now - have to see if I can find a server tonight....

I've been 'wasting' much of my time lately playing 'Far Cry' online. It needs PC power the equivalent of active 500/dbls though. Gobsmacking visuals and good gameplay.

gary -
Not being a UT player I dunno. Usually there's a key for getting nemes of players and their respective pings - like tab or F1. Back in the day, ping was all-important. Depending on the CPU load of the game, anything over 150 or so is getting on for unplayable. Ideally you need to be under 100 (or 50) - so make sure you are not playing on a server that's in Seattle, or Auckland....
If you've got CoD I'm 'mookie' and usually on the UK Jolt servers kicking GI ass.

Ah right I see, in which case I normally hover around ping 30-40, its bloody fast thats all I know.
Just goes to show that computer games are not that difficult as soon as you face humans they shoot you in the back!

UT2004 is too bloody fast for me, but I am mildly addicted to Battlefield Vietnam at the mo.
CoD was excellent single player, but mulitplay didn't hit quite the spot, IMO.
You can probably give Manhunt a miss...

UT2004 is the tops, and I've been playing the Unreal series since it started.
Far Cry looks stunning, and apparenlty gets much much better lookin once you have DirectX9c and compatible drivers installed and a card such as the GF6800 installed.
If anyone in the UK (pings matter) fancies a UT2004 1v1, im up for it.
