Posted by: Not For Me on 21 May 2004
I thought a new thread was needed.
My last music DVD was:
Fischerspooner - DVD #1
With all of #1, all the videos, a documentary, artwork, and aboout a dozen remixes of Emerge, 15th, Invisible etc.
Nice!
ITC - Ian Smagghe - Suck my Decks

Sara McLachlan - "Mirrorball" - everything Afterglow Live isn't...sychronized, better musical arrangements, etc. I am pleased with this one.
James Taylor - "Live At The Beacon Theatre" - stunningly good in all aspects. Watching on our new 26" LCD flat-screen tv with the audio routed through the Naim system this is just a terrific overall production.

Couple of old reliables:
Eagles "hell freezes over"
Crosby, Stills & Nash "The Acoustic Concert"
both are excellent, but the highlight is on the CS&N disc, Nash and Crosby doing "Guinnevere" ... just one acoustic guitar and two voices, brings tears of joy at the beauty they create. Astonishing.

Hi,
Just finished watching Paul Simon -You're the One -in concert.
Just an very talented guy surrounded by a bunch of very very good musicians - the whole concert rocks. The video pressing via dvi from my 2910 into LCD TV is stunning and the sound in dts...
brill.
Naim, you would do worse than to get this for Bristol for the Av set (that's If you don't already have it of course)..

In my view, DVD is at its best with live concerts, particularly on a good home cinema set-up with large screen.
Whilst I impatiently await "Pulse", by Pink Floyd (due out next month apparently, although I'm not holding my breath), I content myself with the best-sounding, best looking music DVD I've seen & heard so far - Procol Harum Live at the Union Chapel.
Although I only bought this on a whim, mostly because I like "Whiter Shade of Pale", the combination of atmospheric DTS soundtrack, awesome picture quality and last but not least the superb performance by the band make this a truly breathtaking experience, and I can't praise it highly enough.
A real revelation in terms of sound quality is "Queen's Greatest Hits", a compilation of their music videos but remastered in DTS 24/96. I only bought it for the wife, but now if I want to show off my 7.1 surround system at its best, "Bohemian Rhapsody" on this disk is my first choice.

Simon & Garfunkel "Old Friends - Live on Stage"
very good, crack band with Warren Bernhardt on piano and Jim Keltner on drums.
Boz Scaggs "Greatest Hits - Live"
at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, again, a terrific band and the blue-eyed soul of Mr Scaggs - he does get a groove on.
Alice In CHains - "MTV Unplugged"
if you like the album, you will love the DVD. Jerry Cantrell is terrific and Mr Staley does his version of Kurt Cobain and/or Elliot Smith. A talent lost.

Pink Floyd-The making of Dark Side of the Moon. Complete with recreated guitar solos, tantalizing clips from the original tracks (i.e. hearing only the vocal harmonies), the original blokes who provided the 'of course I was in the right' patter.... and the list goes on. I had no idea of the sheer genius that went into the the sculpting of this (ahem)Timeless masterpiece. A must for both fans and haters of the Floyd.

Roy Orbison - Black and White Night (includes friends like Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes).
David Gilmour in Concert - Superb
Alison Krauss + Union Station Live - classy bruegrass
Nothing if not varied!
Cheers

'The genuine telecasts'. Six vol. collection of live Dylan. The quality is well ropey in parts, but you can never have enough of the great man.

The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story; documentary which apparently was broadcast in the UK. Great footage of people like Robyn Hitchcock and Graham Coxon (Blur) doing Syd's tunes. Also film of the original Floyd doing stuff from Piper at some psychedelic dungeon in '67! Doubles as a requiem for the 60's dream, in some respects, with heartfelt reminiscences from Roger and Dave, as well as other Floyds and Floyd associates.
It attempts to answer the musical question "Vegetable Man, where are you?"

Robert Randolph opened for Eric at the Royal Albert hall last year. An astonishing musician! The whole Crossroads set is tremendous, especially seeing JJ Cale on stage with Eric.

Thanks for this recommendation, this IS a superb DVD.
Other recent buys: Sheryl Crow "C'mon America 2003" Pretty decent, bought primarily because the guitarist on this tour is Peter Stroud, who I have seen live several times in the NW with Pete Droge. A wonderful player.
Jason Mraz "Live, Tonight:Not Again" Wasn't really familiar with JM music. This is a cd/dvd set and his mucic is an interesting jazz/pop style that is quite good at times.
But the Gilmore is the real keeper in this group.
