What was your last Music DVD purchase?

Posted by: Not For Me on 21 May 2004

I thought a new thread was needed.

My last music DVD was:

Fischerspooner - DVD #1

With all of #1, all the videos, a documentary, artwork, and aboout a dozen remixes of Emerge, 15th, Invisible etc.

Nice!

ITC - Ian Smagghe - Suck my Decks

Great songwriter, can be a bit of a goober live but he is an entertainer/showman. And as the best always do, he surrounds himself with spectacular musicians. I have seen him with three different bands (Guilty Dogs, Goners and North Mississippi AllStars) and they were all terrific.

James Taylor "Pull Over" (1-dvd) - Maybe even better than "Live At The Beacon Theatre". From the "October Road" tour, stellar band and lots of fun.

Dido "Live" (1-dvd, 1-cd) - Since she has been trashed on here so many times, I knew I would at least enjoy her, and I do. Well produced, catchy beats, nice to have in both formats.

Police "Synchronicity Tour" (1-dvd) - Very good, though the music is showing its age. I actually find myself more fond of some of Sting's solo stuff (ie: Sacred Love and Brand New Day)

Good listenin'

Lovely to See You, which is the Moody Blues live @ the Greek Theatre in L.A. last year; it's reportedly shot in HD (not that I'd know with my ten-year-old Sony CRT). Upside: they tackle a few old album tracks that I thought I'd never hear 'em do in concert (e.g. "The Actor", "Are You Sitting Comfortably?", "Higher & Higher" complete with silly dancing from Graeme). Downside: it's the Justin & John show now; Ray Thomas had already retired before this show, so we get an anonymous flautist (who is quite good, technically), but no more "Legend of a Mind"; plus his Welsh baritone is missed in the harmonies, the band sounds lighter now. I'm glad to have this DVD, but with Mike Pinder and now Ray gone I don't think I'll be going to any more Moodies shows; some indefinable vibe (like the Beatles without George and Ringo, maybe) seems to have left the band, although I still think they're great.

An Olde Farte Observation

Increasingly I am buying DVDs of recent concerts; I enjoy watching them in my own home (with sound piped through the Naim set), pausing the DVD machine when I want to pee or make coffee, and not dealing with crowds. Plus, here's a devastating math imbalance that may be undermining concert-going, at least for us lower-middle-class Boomers: $15 or so for a (say) Stones DVD; $100+ to see the Stones (or whomever) from a quarter-mile back. Plus no searches at the gates to get in, crowd jostling, dude's girlfriend up on his shoulders right in front of me (I'm short to boot), $10 for a beer, etc. To be fair, being 52 means I've seen the Stones live several times, so this may not prove out so much for the young'uns.

I'm with Bhazen, though I confess I do have tickets to see the Stones at Wembley this summer (if it's finished!)I bought the Cream at the Royal Albert Hall dvd. We were lucky enough to have front row seats so actually we're in shot a few times! A great souvenir of a wonderful night.
