Projector & Screen (InFocus ScreenPlay 4805)
Posted by: arf005 on 31 October 2004
Hi folks,
Am interested in hearing from anyone would bought/is thinking of buying a DLP projector in the 'budget' range of the market... See thread below - page 8 for more details/background.
http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=48019385&m=113104182I've been thinking about the Infocus ScreenPlay 4805 for £1300 or so plus a fixed screen £400-600 (not fully researched the screen yet so price may change). I'd be interested if anyone has bought this new one, or the older model the 4800.....
We saw the new one at Sevenoaks in Edinburgh a few weeks back and it looked impressive for the price, blacks were black and colours rich. The throw distance is going to be less than what we saw it through too, so might even improve...?? I still think fixed screen is the way to go as it's a dedicated room, tv will be going down into the lounge, and we have black-out blinds to protect it from direct sunlight.
Any thoughts or comments......
Cheers,
Ali

A friend has the 4800 which was pretty impressive, and by all accounts the 4805 is even better.
Spoke to Alastair at Signals on Friday re. this and he agreed - I think he is also doing some sort of deal with the 4805 as well.
Give him a ring on 01473 655171 and have a chat - he is a goob bloke who knows his stuff and won't try to fob you off with any old rubbish.

I've had a budget DLP projector - Optoma H30 - for several months now and I've been very, very impressed by it. I originally went to the shop (also Sevenoaks in Edinburgh) intending to buy the Screenscene 4800 but after advice and a demo went for the Optoma instead.
I don't recall what screen it is I went for but it was about £200 for a 8ft pull down model and seems to do the job.

Hy!isaw 4805 i a top demo and pigture was realy
good.Important that you can darken your room perfect.Performance depends also alot on the source and its connect to the beamer (choosing
output input and cable.)
Think there aere tests on areadvd.de and
www.cine4home.de O.J.

Thanks folks.
RoyleBlue - Ipswich is a bit far off for a demo, but, when the time comes, if he is still doing a deal for projector and screen I'll give him a call - Cheers!
Steve G - I had thought about that model too Steve and the guys in Sevenoaks are really helpful/friendly - nice location too in the Grassmarket - handy for a pint afterwards.... We popped in totally out of the blue, and they had just set up the new model 4805 after just getting it in. They raved about it at this price point, I did mention other models but got a shake of the head, and with LOTR Fellowship of the Ring as a demo it was very impressive! Unfortunately we are limited on screen choice due to the ceiling/velux window in the Den, fixed screens are more expensive (so I was told) but pull downs have to be mounted horizontally flat.....
o.j. - As for the light levels....there's now worries there! The velux, aluminium backed, black out blinds are like day/night!! Source it Rotel DVD player and even though it's a few years old it has component video helped by being of American origin I suppose, and that would be my choice for hook-up.
Thanks also for the link....I am gutted I can't speak German though!!!! Review looked great, loads of detail and interesting pics of the internals....bummer!
Thanks again,
Ali

The guys in Sevenoaks were very good. I'd walked in without arranging a demo but they managed to fit me in and we spend a while going through the various options. The H30 was the hot choice at the time because it had a faster (4x) colour wheel than the 4800, but I suspect that might be something which is changed with the newer version.
If you're in town again and want a demo of a similar system in a home environment then let me know and we can sort something out. I have a dedicated home cinema room but it doesn't have a big enough free wall space for a fixed screen (which I'd have preferred) which is why I went with the pull down one.
We have black out blinds on our windows (one of which is a Velux) but the DLP projectors are quite bright anyway so you don't have to have the room as dark as you would with an LCD projector.

Wow, cheers Steve! appreciate the offer!
We are both from Edinburgh originally, moved away due to our folks jobs, even went to the same primary school - Sciennes.....before meeting again and ending up together many years after! We were back down in good 'ol reekie for a weeks holiday (plus my folks are out at West Linton) and it was really cool being back 'home' doing all the touristy type stuff....
Just out of curiosity - what's the rest of your set-up...?? Source, amps etc.
If/when we are planning on coming down again, and have some spare time, I'll e mail you in advance if that's ok....
All the best,
Ali

Ali!i wish ihad aso such adarkened room like you,but i have not and so im watching my (dlp) beamer only when its datk outside.in winter no problem at 6pm ,during summer i listen longer to vinyl.(not bad)and start watching movies at half past 9 pm.
The test in cine for home is very good and
i think their homepage is one of the most informative all over the world concerning new home cinema and video products.(hope somebody can help you to translate the important details.)
I had nearby the same "language problem" with naims Homepage/forum,but imo its worth to bear
the translation complications, because of the useful informations (non of the other specific forums have that quality of information)
