Kevin Coyne.......

....died a couple of weeks ago.
So, to mark his passing, I recommend his remarkable debut on Virgin Recods, "Marjory Razorblade". Good, old-fashioned live takes from The Manor in Oxford, as I understand.

I bought this last year and it's pretty good, sort of psych folk/rock. Some of it is pretty bonkers but it's mostly excellent and recommended to anyone with a bent for the likes of Beck

It's very sad.
However, I do have to say I always thought Kevin Coyne a bit of a tosser & albums rather shite [sort of pre-emptive Billy Bragg], & could never see Peels's fascination with same; Returned the 1st Dandelion LP to the shop after just the one listen.
After a suitable pause for mourning, I would ask people to renew their cries for Bridget St John & Medicine Head albums to be more widely available [and Principal Edwards etc etc for the even more obsessive]

Kevin Coyne (and his first band "Siren") gave me one of my first LP records - "Strange Locomotion" - which I must have played several 100 times (well, partly, because it was one out of 10ish...) - Around 71-73. I was 12, then, and felt "real cool". Have bought some of his records over time and was happy to even find a CD version of "Strange Locomotion". I knew he was living not too far from my place (in Germany), but never made it to one of his concerts or exhibitions in Nürnberg.
Personally, I miss the guy. He couldn't sing, he couldn't paint, but he sang and painted, and moved something in me. Rest in peace, Kevin !
Best regards, freundliche Grüße

I hadn't heard of Kevin's death until I read it in the current issue of Uncut. I have to say that , during my student years, Dynamite Daze and Bursting Bubbles were essential albums and still well worth a listen .
May well dig them out tonight.

As I live very close to Nürnberg I actually -- and quite literally -- bumped into him on a couple of occasions (he was drunk every time). A Kneipe I frequent has had a permanent exhibition of naive paintings of his for years now. The paintings show the moon in all kinds of every-day situations: doing the laundry, watching the telly etc. If you're ever in these parts I'll take you!

One of Kevin's albums, I think it was Dynamite Daze, helped me through some sort of depression in the late Seventies when I didn't have a clue about what to do with my life. I still love Millionaires and Teddybears and 'Babble' the album he made with Dagmar Krause, who's one of my favourite female singers.
Saw him live on the night I decided to stop drinking alcohol, (well, for a shorter period anyway) somewhere in 1981 or so.
He shall be remembered for album titles such as 'Legless in Manilla'.
Miss him.
