New digital camera - advice please

Posted by: JonR on 28 May 2004

Guys,

I'm interested in buying a digital camera, one that's reasonably good quality and fairly inexpensive. I'm not a serious photographer by any stretch of the imagination so it would not be used that frequently. I've got an 'outline' budget of about £100.

Having said that I've just seen an offer today for the Olympus D395 (spec: 3.2m pixels, 4 x digital zoom, 1.8" LCD screen, 16Mb memory card) for £120, which is £50 off the original price. About £20 above my budget but the spec probably covers everything I will ever need and if it's worth it I'll buy it.

So, does anyone have any experience with this camera, or a similar model or with Olympus digital cameras in general? Or can anyone recommend a similar-priced model? Also, how many pictures does a 16Mb memory card hold?

Any advice/opinions gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jo,

Thanks! 20 - 493?? That's a helluva difference in the number of photos just from a change of resolution!

By the way, if you don't mind me asking, is the c-350 about the same price as the D395?

By the way, forgot to add...

The ideal digital camera should be Mac-compatible.

Only if you have a Mac.

One bit of advice, I bought my card at a little photo outlet in Cardiff for £20, literally next door in Comet, they were being sold for £49.99! So shop around. Oh and invest in a lithium battery, I got two for £10 on ebay! I don't have a mac, so have zero clue if it is compatible.

Jo, thanks again, some valuable advice there. £120 is the price the D395 is on offer for, so it seems quite reasonable. Assuming I go ahead with the purchase I'll definitely shop around for the accessories!
