Personality on Hi Fi Fora

Muchachos
In common wiuth many of us, I post on more than one HiFi Forum. It has struck me of late, how much pointless polemic there is on the 'net, where you are not allowed to express Opinion: where people can be downright rude to you and bleat to the Mods when you reply in kind, and where conjecture and suppostion is presented as FACT and dont you dare argue.
IMO, this Forum is very lightly Moderated - there seems to be a good deal of self-censorship here, whereby contributors will say, politely ( at first, anyway ) that what you are saying may not make sense. From what I see there is very little actual intervention by the Mods - one racist clot was removed, quite rightly, by Adam Meredith recently.
An example of the approach to stroppy posts - I misread something by Deanne F, very recently, and made some childish comments. Rather than yapping to the Mods or indulging in polemic insult overkill. he pm'd me, very politely, asking what he had done to upset me. By this time I had realised my error and nearly died of shame. I had no hesitation in apologising.
To me, this is the mark of a more adult Forum: tolerance of other peoples' point of view, and an acceptance that other posters are people too.
Elsewhere, I expressed my thoughts about what I saw as poor form: this lead to about six other people chiming in and one of them eventually called me a c**t. Charming.
Thanks to all of my fellow posters, I know that on occassion I am abrasive but I certainly feel more tolerated and even accepted here than elsewhere. Hats off to the Mods, too.
Regards
Mike

I joined the Naim forum in 1996, I think when it started, and I thought it was intelligent & interesting. I'm still here after 8 years and I think it's still a great place and I have had the pleasure of meeting some nice people.

Well SaidMike,
This certainly echoes my own feelings on this matter. I do not agree with all the posts on this forum,[how strange] but it's very refreshing and If I may say so unusual to be able to engage with all manner of folks, in debate without the usual recourse to [generally] personal insult.Whilst on this subject it may well also be the time to mention the fact that along side the moderators there are a few and for reasons of their personal modesty I will not name them [ but for the older ones amoungst us who will remember] a sort of "angry from {formalLy} Tumbridge wells" jumps to mind] people who by the nature of their posts and well thought out contributions also tends to influence in the best posible way the more extreme posters amoung us So THANKS ALL ROUND FOLKS.

mike, unfortunately some people treat these fora as places to hang out with their so-called mates, and live in their own little world ridiculing people rather than contributing anything worthwhile.
they treat fora such as this as their own 'space', and forget that others are as entitled to be here as they are, in fact more so, if the 'others' in question are here to learn something/share information about hi-fi and music, i.e. what fora such as this are actually for!
then you have the groups of people who don't like to have their established, deeply ingrained, beliefs challenged.
they've formed their views on hi-fi years ago, don't wish to learn anything new, and most importantly, consider their opinion as fact!
also, each forum has what it considers as an 'accepted norm'.
if your viewpoint/mentality doesn't conform to the 'accepted norm', you quickly become a target for abuse, and are hounded out by the regulars. it's the old school playground thing.
I'd say this forum is the exception, though.
as you know, jason hector recently wrote about hi-fi fora in hi-fi+, and he touched on the subject of cliques.
I think you'd have to be pretty naive not to believe they exist and are in fact alive and kicking!
hey ho, such is life.

This is my first experience with any kind of forum on the internet. I have only been around for about a month but I like it (apart from how it cuts into my stereo listening time). The members are friendly to the point I feel almost embarrassed - I can think of no other word. I try never to forget that there are real people with feelings behind every post and it seems that most other members post with this assumption in mind too.
I found the forum by clicking on the button on the Naim homepage one day and I'm glad I joined. I have laughed out loud at quite a few postings too.
BTW Mike, you are a gentleman.

Hi,
The reason I stay with this forum (apart from owning Naim Kit) is that usually you do get balanced views with reaoning behind them, unlike other forums. On some of the other forums they treat naim owners as if they have been brainwashed!

This forum used to be dogged by people like Stallion who kept going on about how everyone else was in cliques apart from him and his mates.
Thankfully those days are over now.

The web's a wonderful place to behave like this. I think all fora go through their ups and down and we're no different. On balance we are, erm.... balanced. this is no mean achievement.
Do people really think Naim owners have been brainwashed? How very sad. That's probably a concequence of a dognatic minority - on both sides. Just like real life I guess.

Mike LaceyWhilst I agree with most of what you've written, I feel it should be pointed out that - Not so long ago, you jumped on my case uttering silly words such as
"you spilt my pint", you came across as rather childish, someone who thought this was your turf and was none to happy about me posting here.... got your knickers in a right twist!

PS I've no problem with you, just thought I'd point this out, as you brought up the subject

In Mike's defence I must say that he acted like a gentleman toward me. Not only did he apologise to me personally when I PM'ed him but he posted his apology on the thread in question.
We all have bad days. We all make impulsive remarks (and purchases...) and we are all guilty of stupidly hurting other people's feelings occasionally.
It is a mark of character to subject oneself and one's actions to inspection and admit when we are wrong.

Best newcomer in ages.
Most just post an enquiry about upgrading their relatively humble system, get a couple of answers and fuck off.
It's good to have more new blood arguing the toss on various issues from folks who don't hide behind silly monikers, who can actually spell correctly, (for the most part) string a few words together to make sentences and paragraphs that are interesting to read.
Regards,
Steve.

Just a bit off-topic here but I can't deflect the accusation that I appear to be brainwashed about Naim. My last demo at my dealer's was a comparison between different integrated amplifiers and one pre/power amp, all made by Naim. My next demo will be between pre-amps and power amps/support stand/phono stage, all made by Naim. I am unable to contemplate auditioning any other brand (pity Naim don't make turntables!). There are, however, more reasons to buy Naim than just how good it sounds.
BTW, thanks Steve. I don't know what to say.

I'd just like to join Steve here in extending a warm and friendly welcome to anybody considering posting for the first time. As you can see, we're a really friendly bunch and we realize that by web convention, perfect english, typing and spelling are not an absolute requirement. Indeed, english may not be your first language. But don't let that put you off - you will be treated with respect and warmth.
By most of us.
Sheesh!

It will be nice to meet you Fritz. However, I don't drink so you will have to bring your own.
It will be good to finally settle the gender question too....

I think you're all gentlemen, if a little crazy (in a good way).
I've met a couple of good friends through this forum and learnt a lot about music. How good is that?

I agree with Mike and others that the forum generally works well. I quite enjoy having my views / preconceived ideas / prejudices challenged. It only becomes a bore when people are downright rude rather than simply abrasive. The Ken Bigley thread is in danger of going that way at the moment. If we all can't get on whilst holding very different views at times, whether its on IFAs, Iraq or Mana frames, then its a sad state of affairs indeed. You learn stuff too.
(I secretly quite liked the days when Stallion went nuts though

it'd be a major drag if we were all the same!
my favourite posters are those who have a bit of an edge to them, and who are at times controversial.
it makes for an interesting read.
people who are a bit different are more entertaining.
I find the politically correct crew, and those who sit on fence on almost every subject discussed, very boring.
but it takes all sorts...
