Sad songs

Borrowing a fasinating thread from a Van Morrison list: whats the most heart breaking song\rendition you've come across?
For me it would have to be:-
Jimmy Holiday - 'The turning Point'
If this dosn't move you , your terminally insensitive!
Neil

Suicide Note by Pantera

Try Damien Jurado singing 'Medication.
Heavy and depressing rather than plain sad, but boy, does it ever make you feel better about your own situation...

"See you soon", Coldplay and "Meteorology", Matthew Jay...

That track's dark and dirty, but I don't find it sad... Mind you, I'm a massochist when it comes to depressing songs etc. I LOVE "Sweetness follows", "Low" and "Country feedback" by REM for example, specifically BECAUSE they're sad and depressing...

I reckon one of the saddest (for emotion pulling etc) tracks I have is "The kick inside" by Kate Bush.

"The next life" by Suede's pretty depressing as well...

domfjbrown - To each, his own. I find Eleanor Rigby to be a sad song - perhaps overexposure has lessened its impact? Here's another for the list - Tears in Heaven by Clapton.

...as far as truly great songs that actually move me, two that come to mind are "Tank Park Salute" by Billy Bragg, and "Hard Love" by Martin Simpson, specifically the live versions of both.

Its about a junkie mother who had her chidren taken away.

I actually cannot play it: it features young children sobbing for their mum: rumour has it that the producer told some kids that their mum had died, and recorded the result..

Utterly harrowing.

Oh, and _anything_ by Robson and Jerome.

Mike

Spending money I don't have on things I don't need.

Mike, spot on (and the story about producer Bob Ezrin recording his children is true). But isn't it more harrowing/depressing than sad?

Personally I think Pale Blue Eyes is a better example orf a sad Lou song.

Some of Scott Walker's loveliest songs, like It's Raining Today, The Bridge or Copenhagen are incredibly sad.

But I think the saddest song ever recorded is Joy Division's Decades.

The Moody Blues - New Horizons always gets me a bit. I know it's more an inspirational song but it's a nice one. I asked Justin Hayward about it and he told me he wrote for his farther who had died very early on in his (Justin's) career...

In general I'm more into album titles than songtitles, but Pale Blue Eyes is a firm favourite for more than 30 years (does anyone know the Patti Smith bootleg 'Teenage Perversity and Ships in the Night where says "This song was written by Lou Reed for Hank Williams who died of an overdose of pills and a hang up in the back of a limousine on the way to a gig'?

A few other sad songs I can think of are:

Weeping - Throbbing Gristle
Soul and Fire - Sebadoh
Twinkle - Box of Chocolates

Have fun (still)!

Tim Hardin-How can we hang on to a dream
The Cure-Swimming the same deep waters as you
Billy Holliday-Strange fruit & Gloomy sunday

A couple from June Tabor;

No Man’s Land/Flowers of the Forrest from Ashes and Diamonds.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda from Airs and Graces.

Another vote for 'Gloomy Sunday' here, Bjork sang this live a few years ago at some benefit concert (the one where she duetted with Joni Mitchell), and the arrangement was gorgeous... I think it was by Vince Mendoza. Always wish she'd recorded this.

Other sad songs:
"I can dream can't I"
"Alone again naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan (one I only recently heard again and paid attention to the lyrics)
"Everything means nothing to me" by Elliott Smith
"Sunday in Savannah" by Nina Simone, recorded live the night after Martin Luther King was assassinated.

No singing, but it sure is sad and a little scary, too.

Lovely stuff. Thanks Johan Smile

Cheesy I know, but if you want to get me blubbing play me this ..

I know I need a small vacation
But it don't look like rain
And if it snows
That stretch down south
Will never stand the strain
And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time ..

Thanks, me thinks so, too.

Oh, that reminds me of Sometimes It Snows In April by Prince (Parade) - soooooo sad, nice recording, too.

Vincent by Don McLean. A beautiful song on its own but for me it’s also a reminder of a sad rebound relationship during which I was still pining for my lost love. All the more depressing for having taken place largely in Paisley during a wet late winter and spring.

The Winner Takes It All by Abba. A heartbreakingly frank and autobiographical account of a relationship falling apart. Beautiful lyrics, music and vocal make this one of the most painful of all. Anybody who thinks that Abba = bubblegum should listen to this and a few others from the same period.

'Vincent', yes.... another Jimmy Webb song 'The Moon's a Harsh Mistress' was recorded by a Norwegian singer called Radka Toneff with jazz pianist Steve Dobrogosz, on an album 'Fairytales', which is in places quite beautiful (but rare). Also 'All My Trials' by Nick and Gabrielle Drake, a bootleg. Oh and 'Sire of Sorrow' by Joni Mitchell... not going to start on classical pieces as there are too many!
