Country Joe & The Fish

Posted by: Kevin-W on 13 June 2004

My mate Darren dragged me along to the Country Joe & The Fish gig last night at The Borderline. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it, but I did.

A lot of the material was very political (Bush, Iraq, Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, etc) but delivered with a big dollop of sly humour so it never became preachy. His band (all original Fish with only Barry Melton missing) was as tight as the proverbial gnat's chuff and tthe man himself was in fine voice. And yes, he did his most famous song - but as a Dixieland number with CJ on trombone!

Anyway, can anyone suggest a good album? I've been told that Electric Music For The Mind & Body is a good place to start. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

It was indeed, thank you. I bought "Electric Music" and you're right, it does sound a little dated. But in a good way, if you know what I mean!

Once I'm earning properly again I'll probably check out some of your other suggestions.

Cheers

I have this really vague recollection of seeing / hearing a CJ + Fish show in 1970.

Fun band at the time, though of course nothing beats the Lovin' Spoonful.

I remember a couple decent early J Sebastian albums back in my vinyl days.

And the wide striped t-shirts .... wore those with corderouy knickers, at times, in my high school days. Believe it was the year I was awarded "best-dressed boy" at my school Wink

Fond memories.

More likely one of my girlfriends was sitting there - in a totally unmurky way, I hasten to add. We were teenagers back then!

Nick,
How ya doing?
The merest mention of Quicksilver was enough to raise my busy little head and prompt a suggestion that you perhaps put together a nice concise beginners guide to classic West Coast Psych albums for those out there who may not have discovered what insence sticks were made for...
