The Apple Slag (thats me)

Well after months of deliberation and non care I got me one of these.
Trouble is my graphics card has in essence got out and told me to piss off, so more outlay.
Still its only a bit of fun
Let me tell you I am totally blown away by the screen, utterly chuffed.

Im pretty sure it does..
there is a monitor socket on the right hand side, ive never used it but it has a block of 24 pin holes (three rows of 8) and a square block of 4 on the right edge of the socket..
looks like the perfect home for a mac monitor to me!

iGary,
Hope you got a bit of a discount as the display should have 1920x1200 pixels. ;-)
Joe, who's also very pleased with his new monitor

Actually, the picture clearly shows that you have two penises, although they do look a bit on the small side, now that you mention it.
cheers, Martin

Yeah, but they are £1500!
That's an awful lot to pay for an extra 300 pixels and a nice silver case when you can have a non-Apple version of essentially the same monitor in 20" (1600x1200) for about £700. So you could have bought 2x20" (for 3200x1200) or else bought a 20" and a high-end graphics card.

Mat, to an extent I agree however I have only ever seen one type of screen I would consider other than apple and that is Sony, however I couldn't see a 23 inch model and they are similarly priced.
No doubt I could buy a goodmans stereo from Comet cheaply as well.

Gary,
23" Panels are expensive becuase they are made in such small numbers which makes them terrible value unless you desparately need that many pixels. A 20", even an Apple 20", is just so much better value.
"I have only ever seen one type of screen I would consider other than apple and that is Sony"
98% of the picture quality in an LCD screen is the panel itself. In Apple's case this is (AFAICT) the LG/Philips 20ms S-IPS panel albeit an Apple specific version to get their prefered 100 pixels/inch sizing. Models from Philips and LG with the same panel give essentially the same picture quality and performance for far less money. Alternatively there are other hi-end 20" IPS panels based on Sharp's panel, notably the multi-award winning Eizo L885 (although that is nearly as expensive as the Apple).
The other issue is that S-IPS screens are predominantly aimed at media and content creation professionals as their main advantages over TN+Film panels is their colour accuracy and contrast and the 170 degree viewing angle (which is great if you want to use it for watching DVDs, say). As they are a lot more expensive it's normally only worth paying if these are big issues for you. They also compromise on response time to some extent so they are usually not as good at games and for playing, UT 2004 a much cheaper TN panel is probably better.
Having said all that I am typing this on a laptop that cost me £2k rather than £1.5k because its got a 17" widescreen IPS panel and they do look lovely and most like a proper CRT.
