Getting records professionally cleaned

Posted by: Kevin-W on 29 August 2004

Geezers:

I have just acquired six LPs which are absolutely FILTHY. I've tried playing tthem on the old LP12 but they're really noisy and just pile up fluff on the stylus. Ideally they need to be cleaned with a VPI-type machine, but buying one is (obviously) out of the question.

Does anyone know if there are any shops or dealers in London that will give said LPs (which are actually pretty rare and not available on CD) a good once over?

Thanks in advance

Kevin,

I can't help you with a dealer, but a couple years ago someone here posted this link to a DIY cleaner:
http://www.teresaudio.com/haven/cleaner/cleaner.html

I made one and it has been great; note that the brush, fluid, and design principle are the same as with the expensive VPI cleaner.

This can actually be done more easily than in the link. I didn't bother making a box but just used an old turntable. I also used a $20 wet-dry vac, which required only minimal modification to the crevice tool (and can be used as a normal vac otherwise).

Kevin,

I could clean them for you semi-professionally with my VPI ? Only trouble is I am not in London until Saturday.

I seem to remember hearing somebody in the Rock & Pop Reckless record store in Berwick Street talk about cleaning the LPs, so that might be worth a try?

Or one of the Jazz type shops, like Harold Moores?

Or a Hi-Fi shop like Grahams perhaps

Good luck anyway
