Has anyone heard/got their latest release - any good?

I saw them play a new track on Jools Holland but thought it was a bit tame.

It was called 'The Love Of Richard Nixon'.

Then again pretty much anything they do is, IMO, going to pale in comparison to 'A Design for Life'.

I'm really hoping this will be good, however, I know it won't be.

I heard them on Later. Plodding and portentous seemed about the size of it.

I think the one after "Design" is the best of the recent releases. Excellent though Design is, it gets a bit samey after a while.

I was a bit disappointed with the one after that (2002/3 release) but it grew on me. I will no doubt give the newest stuff a listen.

Oh, that reminds me, when I worked in Cardiff, James Dean Bradfield came into the shop and he was a miserable so and so. I resisted the temptation to purchase this new one earlier today and plumped for the new A Perfect Circle album, which is good in places, so far.

I'm struggling to imagine an album quite that bad.

"Generation Terrorists" and "The Holy Bible" had their moments but after that they were awful.

Matthew,

I was actually comparing the song they performed on 'Later...' with their well-known 1996 single which in my opinion is one of the best things they have ever done. The album it appeared on was entitled 'Everything Must Go' which I think is pretty good on the whole.

To be honest I'm not that familiar with their earlier stuff - it was 'A Design...' that woke me up to the Manics.

I'm not sure about the Imagine cover, but if you like APC then you will like this one. Cool cover art as well.

Ive been a Manics fan on and off over the years, more for their live performances than their their recordings. Love them or hate them JDB can really make his Les Paul sing.. anyway i bought their new album and so far im pretty underwhelmed... IMO whilst their later albums havent set the world on fire with a bit of listening there were always a couple of gems..
Sadly im yet to find one on this one... If you like the 'Richard Nixon' song then that will probably be the gem for you! If things improve with time ill let you know!

I happen to think that 'Everything must go' (in particular) and 'If you tolerate....." are excellent albums. I'm not as impressed with most of their earlier stuff. But I have to say the few tracks I've heard of their latest do nothing whatsoever for me.

I bought it the other day and had a listen and, to be honest, it is really disappointing. I really like 'Everything Must Go' & 'If you tolerate this...' but their previous album was largely unlistenable and this is just...bland. The wierd thing about it is that my vinyl copy seems to go quiet then loud almost as if there is a load of gunk in the grooves.

One thing (only one thing?) I don't understand:

Is there a political message in their latest single and what is it? (Okay two things..)
