Closet thing to Fraim

Posted by: stevie d on 06 May 2004

Hi All

After finding out today that the house I am looking to buy is all going though my mind has started to wander along the upgrade path yet again.

Basically I have had a few problems with my Optimum rack of late. Although the Stands Unique carbon isolators (thanks for the tip Prowla) have gone a long way to curing the anoying vibration affecting my rack, I still think that I am going to look for an alternative rack for the new living room.

With the obvious option being the Fraim (pennies permitting) is there any stand which could give the improvement Fraim brings a good run for the money?

At the moment I have not set myself a budget as I do not know how many pennies will be available after the move but if I can't afford the Fraim, what is the next best thing....?

Thanks
Stevie

Why not move in, try your current stand, see if vibration is still a problem and save up for a Fraim rather than buying something else and be left wondering, "What if I had waited and bought a Fraim instead?"

Stevie,

Never used a Fraim so keep that in mind, but I'm very happy with my Zoethecus "reference" racks (I think its site is "zoethecus.com"). They work very well, look great (better than Fraim to my eyes), and -- at least in the States -- cost a lot less than Fraim. You can, if memory serves, get a very nice 3-shelf unit in a wood color of your choice for around $800. If you wanted, you could get one or two of the "up-level" shelves for the CD player and preamp (in that order) and a normal shelf for the amp.

Regards,

Chris

Hi,Steve,

Yes a Hutter ( the rack Naim used before designing the Fraim ) is a rack that runs the Fraim pretty close ( and I know someone who's selling one - me !).
Otherwise also consider Mana or Quadraspire or Isoblue, as other worthy candidates.

Good luck,

Rod

To be honest with you I am pretty gutted that the problem is there and the general customer service received from Optimum. My friend is looking for a cheap rack for his Arcam gear so it may have a buyer anyway...

Stevie - You should move in, see what the floors are like, move the stuff around and experiment with positioning before thinking about a Fraim. When the dust has settled and the gear is in the right place to stay - then do it.

Rod,

You have a PT from me, too!

You must be more popular!
