Advice on private sale.

Posted by: ChrisD on 08 January 2005

Im just after a bit of advise when selling something through an advert on the internet.

What precautions should i take to make sure the person is traceable should i not recieve payment?

What is the safest form of payment?

Is it generally accepted that they should send the money before i send the goods or vice versa? Or both done simultaneously?

If it gets damaged in transit am i right in thinking im liable?

Any other points to consider?

Thanks very much

Cash - money up front. Accept any other payment at risk and wait until funds clear.

Receive payment BEFORE sending goods and, if in doubt, wait for clearance.

Get buyer to pay insurance for transit and only ship by a method you have used before and are 100% happy with.

If things go pear-sheaped, claim the courier but get the buyer to understand it is not your problem, but the courier's problem.....

After all that is said and done - if you have any doubts, don't take the risk.Keep the item and sell to someone you trust or can be vouched for by people you can trust.

Signature - surely it's just a Naim ?

If the buyer chooses the courier it's the buyer's lookout but if the courier is your choice then they are acting as your agent and their failure to deliver is therefore your failure to deliver.

If you're the one selling the item, presumably you have a delivery address?

I tend to buy more than I sell, and normally I email and ask for the persons name and address and ask if I can pay via Bank Transfer, not sure if that is really any safer than other methods, but it is traceable.

As others have said, don't send the good before you receive payment, although personally I've sent and received low value stuff before being payed simply because myself and the seller have pointed out we aren't about to get our names shot to shit on forums and newsgroups over fifty quid etc..

I don't use things like Paypal simply because I've heard nothing good about Paypal in the event of a dispute.

So far as transit/deliver, it's generally accepted that the goods are your liability until they are signed for by the buyer, so use an adequately insured method of delivery.

This might sound patronising, but I find you can get a feel for buyers/sellers from their tone in email - one word answers and sentences like "god be with you" generally put me off.

cheers,
Paul
