E10 Problem

Posted by: garyi on 01 September 2004

Oddly not my E10 but my step dads. He has just gond to italy and phoned me up distraught because his olympus is not playing ball.

As I can assertain the thing is turning on ok, he is in P mode and the lens cap is off but when he looks through the eye piece it is pitch black, the read out tells him the usual stuff how many shots are left etc. I checked with him the eye piece lens cover was not engaged, and apparently it does not take a picture.

He changed the batteries when the problems started. Is it poosible the battery compartment is 'dual power' and he has put some in the wrong way round?

I am at a loss because usually on the E10 even if it is off you get a grayish picture of the world. He insists it has not been knocked or anything.

Does anyone have any ideas I can feedback to him when he calls me later?

Gary, I have an E10 and i seem to think there is a way of locking the mirror up for cleaning or something... it could be this? I'll dig the book out and have a look

I think it could be knackered, he is not getting any luck. The display on the back works, the buttons work the focus works, infact every thing works except the view finder and the pictures, I think the prism has slipped or something, totally pitch black pictures.

I'm not familiar with the Olympus E10 is it a slr or one of their digital cameras? If it's a SLR when I used to run the Photo Dept at the Uni.of Brighton we had similar problems with students own OM10'S[SLR'S] the flexible circut board used to crack and it was uneconomical to repair. If it is a SLR some cameras have a problem with the mirror sticking in the raised position [thus blocking out the line of sight through the pentaprism] when used in one of the auto settings either speed or aperture priority caused by trying to use the camera when the batterys are low,if it is something like this they can normally be released by setting the camera on the manual setting and winding on or pressing the shutter release button depending on when the mirrors position froze. Sorry I can't be more helpfull but worth a try
best of luck,
oldie.

A problem has been discussed elsewhere that indicate that the E10 E20 have a shutter life of 20000 exposures.

I guess that you will have to get it sent back for a service.
