Slim Server software and Apple Airport Express

Posted by: Eddie Pugh on 03 November 2004

I'm considering setting up a Soundserver as a Secondary System for convenience etc and am in need of a bit of advice.

I have an old Apple Airport powering a wifi b network in the house at present and have successfully setup a SlimServer with a few test discs and managed to listen via a Squeezebox emulator on a laptop. This is just a test system at present but it does kind of work.

My question is would it be possible for an Apple Airport Express to act as a receiver/player in such a system or does the Express only work with Apple iTunes acting as a Server.

I kind of like the Express a)becouse I have one available and b) it has the ability to extend my wifi network as well if I upgrade the base to an Airport Extreeme G. The intention being to set up an old HP Jornada IPAQ thing as a remote control for the Slim Server

Any advice appreciated

Eddie,

Ive used both a squeezebox and an airport express and after much experimentation settled on the airport express. To be honest im not sure if the express will work with the slimserver as airtunes is designed to work with iTunes. Once installed you get an extra box in the bottom right hand corner of the Itunes window which allows you to change the sound output from the computers speaker to your chosen airport express. I found that i also prefered the iTunes layout and functionality to that of the slimserver. I use a G4 Powerbook though so the remote control function didn't really matter.... and the express was added to my existing extreme network...

other experiences are posted here..
