'One World' remaster - John Martyn

Posted by: J.N. on 04 November 2004

My copy arrived today and they've done a job on it for sure. Much improved clarity and detail.

It's a two CD set. The original album remastered, with bonus stuff on the second disc - Five live tracks and ten studio out-takes.

I'm looking forward to letting 'Small Hours' wash over me with the lights out.

Wonderful.

I've been thinking of getting this as it's one of my favourite Martyn albums (I'm an ardent fan BTW) but already have it on vinyl. The thought of the bonus stuff doesn't really sway me either so It's really going to have to sound good for me to shell out on this one...

Having now had time for a proper listen on my main system I have doubts.

I've heard this phenomena on 'remasters' before - the sound is cleaner with more detail, but I do wonder if the musical integrity has been sacrificed somehow?

More Hi-Fi - less musically coherent?

I'd be interested in the comments of others. It's still worth it for the great live stuff and interesting out-takes.

I know what you mean JN

The remastered Fairport Convention stuff I've got suffers from what you describe + Sandy Denny's voice seems to grate at the high notes on the Remasters. Surely the expert doing the remastering would notice this?

(Although I'm sure the boys in the Hifi Corner would tell me its cos I'm a HiCap short Winker )
