Question regarding elements of my racer

Guys, many years ago I had half a clue about bikes, I really did. However there are a few elements to my new bike I need some clarification on.

Firstly I have pedals like most bikes, but can these pedals have any adjustments to make them clip in?

I was wondering what the thread was on the bottom of the above peddle?

Also the brakes, I think I have detected that the highlighted screw adjusts the centralisation of the brakes in comparison to the wheel, however is it doing anything else? I find that the back brake is a little spongy, although it might well be the cable which is a little flaky.

Any advice would be great.

I have no idea, re: the pedals, but I think the tiny brake screw is indeed exclusively for centering. Spongy feel may also be due to cable stretch, typical of a new bike.

One tip- reinsert the toe straps and between the L and R slots in the pedals give them a 360 degree twist. That way they'll never slip in the slots and the buckle will always be in the same place.

If you want clipless pedals (why are they called 'clipless' when the 'clip' is the whole point?) you will have to replace the whole pedal. But it's worth it because it will dramatically improve your pedalling efficiency. Riding a bike with normal pedals feels really weird to me these days...

The adjustment screw doesn't do anything else, so feel to tweak it to your heart's content (so that the pads are perfectly equidistant from the rim).

Ludwig is probably right about cable stretch. They should settle down. You may get the same phenomenon with your rear mech, so after a few hundred miles the cable adjuster (the gnurled plastic nut where the cable goes into the rear mech) may also need a tweak.

PS David Millar admits to doping, banned from Tour.... Eek
