House plant insecticide - which?

Posted by: andy c on 12 June 2004

Now come on all you keen gardeners and house planty people, here's a question for you.
We seem to have black fly which are trying to nest in some of the compost surrounding our indoor plants.

We have been recommended a sulphor based insecticide but I wonder if that will work on the soil. I have sprayed the leaves etc with said item, but am concerned I dont want to get rid of all my house plants.

Any suggestions re remedies not so severe?

Provado Ultimate Bug Killer is the only systemic insecticide on the market. Systemic meaning it will be drawn into the plant and when a pest sucks the sap from a shoot, it will take in the poison. One application works for upto eight weeks. It also works as a contact killer.

This will cost about £5.99 for 300ml concentrate.

All other insecticides are crap.

Andy,

It should be safe on house plants, but no chemical is 100% safe on all plants. I've used it on sensitive Tree Ferns (which hate chemicals) and many other types of plants over the past year and never had a problem.

You can also water it in the soil and the plant will take the poision into the plant throught it's roots.
