Brain Salad Surgery Enquiry

Posted by: bhazen on 09 January 2005

This for any ELP fans on the forum...IYHO what is the best-sounding version of Brain Salad Surgery available on CD?

This was the album (along with Dark Side of the Moon and Walter Carlos' A Clockwork Orange) which got me interested in better stereo gear in the 70's.

Stand by for skip loads of abuse.
I only have this on vinyl so would also be interested in the answers.
I'll add Switched on Bach by Wendy/Walter (Walter then) Carlos to the list of "setting off on the quest" albums.

And Iso Tomita's Snowflakes are Dancing.
I don't have BSS on CD, only well-played Vinyl. Have not spun that one in years. May have to do that today. "Load your program, I am yourself" -- total drivel but fun nonetheless! Actually, “Tocatta” is a brilliant interpretation. Lots of ‘70s style bleep-bleeps but is was bleeding edge, state of the art for the time.
Standing by for abuse...

Oh yeah, funny memories. And Jerusalem's orchestration was so OVER THE TOP that even the Floyd didn't beat that.

I listened to it only last night, the 5i revs up the BSS fun factor greatly. The key to ELP listening is not taking 'em seriously (or any pop music for that matter!) and just letting the adrenaline kick in. "Toccata" is the bomb cranked up; not to mention the hyperspace prog of "Karn Evil 9".

Why I love Brain Salad: that queasy mixture of futurism, romanticism, nascent techno and Elgar-esque pomp. It's so far ahead of its time that we haven't got there yet. Admitting I loved it got me called a "fascist" once, which I cherish (and have discussed elsewhere on the Forum)!

The most fun I ever had listening to "Toccata" was in the passenger seat of a friends' Porsche as we hurtled at top speed through the Express Lane tunnel underneath Seattle one crazy night...

If you have the option to play it, the DVD-A version makes the vinyl redundant.

Purely as a favour, I am willing to take the flexidisk off your hands. I'll gladly tape a copy for you.

Gentlemen:

I think a British version of the BSS CD (on Castle?) has the Flexidisk tracks as bonus. I may order it myself (I'd then have 3 copies of the album on CD!!).
