Aren't some CD's 'copy protected' or something that prevents them being bought in the 'states and played here?

Or (quite likely) am I being dumb?

Sure you are'nt asking about DVD's instead?

DVD's ARE region coded. Officially DVD players sold in Europe are set to only play European origin DVD's (region 2) whereas US discs are Region 1 which will not play in a player set for region 2 only.
BUT
that is a token gesture to officialdom. Whenever you buy a DVD player in the high street just say. "OK but it has to be multiregion" and almost by magic in five minutes the dealer will turn it into a DVD that can play any DVD disk including those from the US. he just reprograms the control chip inside the player.

DOH!

That's what I was thinking of, which is strange seeing as I don't even own a DVD player....

Must be suffering with vertigo....

CD's are fine however DVD's and Video's are a different matter. If you have a video it may not play NTSC tapes (we have PAL in the UK) and DVD players bought in the UK do not always play Region 1 DVD's so you will need to check.

Fis,

Though you say it's all down to confusion with DVD's, your question is no less valid. If you pop into the Music Room you'll probably find out why, but suffice it to say that there are various contributors who find that CD's bought in the states (in some cases) tend to be better mastered to a higher standard and therefore sound better than CD's bought from countries in the EU.

Probably worth getting a few tips from those in the know!

BTW...
