Maybe it had too much fuse stuff in it

Graham.

Not a lad any longer and not from London!

Trev,

I suspect they pulled it 'cos it mentioned equipment case fuses. Wouldn't be the first time and I guess you can understand their reasons.

I'm sure it's nothing personal! Smile

I had no bloody idea that was going to happen!

You are acting like a publicity seeking slut.

Why not contact Naim direct instead of shouting off on the forum. Do I really need to tell you how to act.

If I was a moderator.....you would be history.

If someone acts like a spoilt brat, you have to treat them like one. Trevor must admit, if he is honest, is acting like a total Prima Donna.

A little less rudeness if you please.

I would second that (even though I agree with Mick that Trevor should just have contacted the moderators).

In a very civilised, interesting and worthwhile debate, Mick recently told Matthew to "shut up" (as the post contained nothing else, it showed an utter lack of respect). In my books that's scraping the bottom of the barrel, especially coming from someone who keeps calling others "plebs" all the time.

Trevor,

nothing personal. Your thread was deleted as it hinged on a certain practice involving removing or replacing equipment case fuses. The implication was that this was a "recommended" practice, the possible inference being that it was recommended by Naim. This is absolutely NOT the case. Replacing the case fuses with anything other than the specified fuse can at best lead to damaging your equipment and at worst may lead to a serious fire risking not only your own life but that of your family and others living in your building or nearby. It goes without saying that any warranty will also be voided....

Hope that explains things for you.

mick,

thanks.

I thought the point I was making deserved to be seen by everyone, particularly newcomers, so they're fully aware of this rule.

yes sir, sorry sir.
I must say that I find this headmaster attitude of yours rather obnoxious!

quote:
If I was a moderator.....you would be history.

really? then maybe you should take off the headmasters hat and consider this:

1. I am relatively new to the forum, it was my first post regarding the mains, so I had no idea discussing fuses was banned.
I was shocked (to say the least) that something I had spent much time thinking about and typing up had been completely deleted.

2. Half the thread in question had nothing to do with fuses, so I would have thought it more prudent for the part relating to fuses to have been edited, and the remainder left intact.

3. I consider it perfectly reasonable to suggest that a warning is put up on the main screen (in bold letters) to the effect that fuses should not be discussed on the forum.
this way newcomers know exactly where they stand.

now, what's your problem with any of that master mick?

tom,

The thread got pulled because our discussion centred too much on fuses even though we both stated that people should use them. Naim have long had a policy that the F word is not discussed and certainly should never become the major topic. To be honest it survived longer than I thought it might. I hope you found my replies of use while they lasted.

Meanwhile glowing reports about how wonderful your new spurs and consumer box are will not be censored as long as they stay away from the forbidden subject. Try rewriting the main points again with out the F word.

thanks for the explanation.
fortunately, I saved the opening post in my hard drive, so doing what you suggest won't be a problem.

I do not have much time today as I am organising an event at a local hotel.

Your last three responses border on the pathetic and denote either a lack of intellect, a lack of knowledge or just a plain petulant foot stamping attitude.

You have been around long enough to know the position on fuse removal and you are not lacking in intellect.

You got a strop and threw your bottle out of the pram and made your self look to complete fool.

Anyone with an ounce of sense, who had a thread deleted would have contact Naim privately to find out why. That is plain common sense and will get you the best result.

I would guess your image and credibilty are well down the pan with them. Making an error is not a problem, it is how you deal with it that seperates the men from the boys and you have acted like an infant from the lower forms.

I suggest you contact Naim and apologise, because you have acted badly.

Regards

thanks for the explanation. I didn't take it as personal, and I appreciate the reasons behind your decision.
I was just a bit miffed that the thread was deleted without so much as an explanation, and that my time was wasted.
I can assure you that I would never have posted the fuse stuff had I known it would be deleted!
could I suggest that in future if a thread or post is edited/deleted by naim admin, that it is made clear why this has happened, either publically on the forum, or via e-mail to the person it concerns?
or like I suggested, put a permanent warning in the hi-fi corner (in bold print like the copy protection stuff) so that all newcomers know where they stand?
I think this makes good sense.

A warning on the forbidden topic could not be posted on the forum as it would be like telling a 5 year old kid "to not push beans up your nose"

why, derek?
unless you've followed every single mains thread, you're hardly likely to know that discussing fuses is banned.

TN
Posted on: 30 April 2004 by Trevor Newall
interestingly, I've just read this elsewhere from mick:

quote:
Know it alls

Chaps

It amazes me that audiophiles always seem to think they know how to set things up better than the people who make the goods.

Do these people not realise that the makers have more knowledge in their little fingers and what they have in all their heads put together.

Over on the Naim forum we have people messing about with cables, fuses and electrics and they really do convince themselves that they know better. This is despite the fact that JW has spent months of his life perfecting his product and the Naim factory has a team of R&D Engineers who also experiment to arrive at the best way of doing things.

These people, however, be they tinkers or tailors and candlestick makers think they know better.

I have no time for them.

perhaps it might explain why he has the hump?
it will certainly be interesting reading for those who aren't quite so subservient towards every naim recommendation.
I wonder why he didn't post his thoughts here?
not to worry.

"unless you've followed every single mains thread, you're hardly likely to know that discussing fuses is banned"

Actually usually one mains thread is enough to bring this point out.

If there was a Forum notice that said

"Beans are not to be pushed up noses"

Then every new comer would post on the forum

"Why shouldn't I put beans up my nose - in fact I rather enjoy pushing beans up my nose - it gives me a nice gagging sensation that I rather like - etc etc"

Perhaps what we should learn from this is that if the banned subject appears from a recent recruit to the forum then the others should come in and gently mention that "rhino beans" are not to be talked about - perhaps send the person a PM suggesting that they delete the banned words.

Hi,
Once again on a thread we have people not being reasonable and explaining to somone new 'why' something should not be posted etc etc.

If you tell someone 'what' to do, and then don't explain 'why' sometimes, no wonder they get puzzled!

It's also not surprising that some newcomers may well get put off by comments posted on what is, after all, only a forum and then fail to return.

Personally I think thats quite sad.

Politeness costs nothing, but gains everything...

Can I just point out that I see no mention on this Forum, of the importance of NOT taking the caseing off of your kit, and licking the transformer while it is still plugged in.

As there is no warning to the contrary, I just did this and now have a permanent suntan, and a monster Afro haircut. My extremities are still smouldering and the Smoke Alarm is really too loud for words.

Stand by, Salisbury, there will be the devil to pay about this. I'm putting in a call to my Solicitor, Lionel Hutz of Sue, Grabbit and Runne.

mike.
thanks for the glib remarks, but the whole point of this is how do you know what these 'grey areas' are with regard to what's allowed in discussion topics if no one in authority informs you?
what I was discussing could not have been considered as offensive, or even unsafe [if you read what I wrote, I was advocating the use of stock fuses] therefore it was not obvious to me in any way whatsoever that I shouldn't have been mentioning the subject of fuses.

trev and mike

please let it go.

think about what matters most to you both and you will realise (hopefully) that it is neither the naim forum nor fuses.

"Glib" is my limit...

Its Naims forum, and failure to delete a post that outlines a pratice that can cause problems ( and lets not get into that here ) could be seen as condoning the practice. Someone does it, the kit blows up and a resulting fire burns down their house, they turn to Naim who let the post stand.

Its their Forum, their rules. If you dont like it, thats your problem. If you re-read the tone of your queries, they are somewhat intemperate.

An apology would not harm anybody....

not sure where you're coming from here alex, I wasn't "all upset" because richard didn't reply to me until this morning.
I was "all upset" because I had spent time and effort posting something for it then to be deleted out of the blue without any explanation as to why it happened.
I too don't have a problem with what rd has said, but hopefully something can be done so that this sort of thing doesn't happen again.
it's simply a learning process.
