Hello Chris,
I am responding to your post where you have mentioned the Forbidden "F" word, and amazingly your post has not been pulled by the moderators.

Chris Koster writes (mentioning Bigger Fuses) :-

Every 7-10 years, people start trying bigger fuses, or copper rods as fuses, or whatever.
On the last wave I tried all of the above, just to see and hear if there was something good about it.
There wasn't. It sounded much less good than stock. If your system is working like it should, the standard fuse in the correct direction sounds best.
------------------------------------------------

Well, I couldn’t DISAGREE more. And you are even at odds with Richard Dane, who stated in the deleted Fuses thread :-
Quote:-
"All this talk of replacing equipment fuses with higher rated items has raised some concerns here. While we agree that higher rated fuses can improve sound quality, there are safety issues which are overlooked AT YOUR PERIL …………………………………………….." Unquote

If you are unable to hear "anything good", then I know something is awry elsewhere! You even have the advantage of USA unfused Mains plugs, which should give you an even better "open window" to the music.
I have always respected your advice, but in this particular instance it is in direct conflict with my, and hundreds of others, sonic results.

Have fun
Best regards
Roy

It could be that the house wire is better, but I don't think so. I used the same fat wire for another system and it does not sound backwards, but this is somewhat intuition, and more experiments are needed.

Chris,

I take it you've replaced the circuit breaker (ruling it out)? I've had two "bad" breakers ( one bad and brand-new right out of the box!) Both functioned normally (didn't trip, passed current) yet the hifi distorted horribly on peaks at high volume levels.

just curious....

"I was "all upset" because I had spent time and effort posting something for it then to be deleted out of the blue without any explanation as to why it happened."

True to say the thread was deleted quick enough but the explanation for doing so came along much later. Roll Eyes

I experimented with a higher rated fuse in my CDX back in November 2002. If you are into leading edge dynamics then there is a definite improvement to be heard. I even spoke of my findings at the Stafford Naim Musical Evening. Paul Darwin overheard what I had to say and gave me fair warning as to the consequences.

I never could live with that uprated fuse, and a niggling notion that I was acting irresponsibly (even if the risk is considered by some to be only theoretical) urged me to put the standard fuse back in. I even posted a question on here as to the recommended directionality of the standard fuse as I really couldn't be bothered to sit down and listen for myself, and I got an answer!

I just wanted to put the the whole fuse uprating episode behind me and enjoy music feeling safe and secure.

Some upgrades/improvements you can't live without once you've heard them. Uprated fuses are just not one of those those upgrades.

Here we are eighteen months on and I've never been tempted, not even once to put that 20 amp fuse back in. I'm saving it for the taxi should the fuse betwixt battery and taximeter ever blow on a Saturday night.

Regards,

Steve.

If that is your finding, Chris ,fine.

Well at least you concede that there IS a difference in sound

"best" is subjective... You may prefer whatever you may prefer, it would be absurd for me to question that, but to suggest that if others` findings are different, then their system is not set up correctly, or not working as it should, is , if I may put it politely, nothing more or less than "spin" IMHO

Apart from this,I find it hard to accept that increasing the impedance of the mains supply will improve the sound, where many many other tests (well beyond Naimland) report the exact opposite

I would suggest the complete contrary to you...if one obtains a worse sound by increasing the rating, I would suggest that thare are setup faults in the system being exposed and the cure is to sort these, rather than restrict current flow: i e two wrongs do not make a right.

These are my findings.

And so far I have not heard any Naim system, set up by those that ought to know how to do it, to give me any reason to doubt my conclusions.....though I am always open to be convinced of the opposite!

best wishes

Laurie S

Laurie,

About fifteen minutes into your first installation with CK is about all it takes to dispel all notions about how it "should be done".

Mick Perry

You are beginning to act like somebody else who got kicked off the Forum Ease up. Trevor explained himself. What more do you want? And Mick we don't want to loose you too.

Welcome Trevor

Ignore Mick when he gets nasty. He misses his old freind and starts acting like him at times. IMHO that is.

Are you suggesting Chris Koster is the only person who knows how to instal Naim kit?

Tom

Actively enjoying it all

i can claim 15 seconds! Smile

Seriously, I am in no way trying to smear Chris, or cast any doubts on his knowledge, experience, or expertise.

i just find the implied suggestion that REDUCING f**** ratings can improve the sound, hard to swallow. Furthermore, for him to suggest that those take this view are not able to set up a Naim system properly, is, I suggest, equivalent to "spin" as some form of attempt to persuade folk that changing the F*** rating from that supplied is not ONLY risky, but ALSO detrimental to performance.

A case "over-egging the pudding", if ever I saw one

Definitely toungue-in cheek!!!

Mike parking cars at the Hotel or is he organising them into neat rows. Who put him in charge. A very rude man a relation of Simon Cowes no doubt. If he were a mod there would only be him here I suspect.

Tom and Laurie,

Certainly I did not mean to imply that CK is the only individual that can properly setup a Naim system. There are several others.

best regards,
