London...what's it like to live & work ?
Posted by: Berlin Fritz on 04 August 2004
I'm in a quandary and I seek advice Londoner's,
ex-pats (or anyone with an opinion).
The situation: I have been out of work in Europe after
redundancy in February...my trade is preventing automotive
engine development and project management of which I have no
years experience. Anyway, the good news for me is that
there is a strong possibility of a job in London working
for the consultancy arm of a UK-based car company.(Daly & Co)
The question:
I will visit London before accepting any offer, but what is it
like for expats living there - eg the upsides and downsides of
accomodation, schooling and working? Any suggestions for
recommended reading matter will be gratefully received
Cheers

P.S. I had a cousin once, who was 2 miles long !

The downsides are that it is expensive to live there, dirty, hot & stuffy, not many open spaces, bad air, conjested, frustrating, not a good place for kids to grow up, the people are pre-occupied and grumpy.
On the upside, it is the centre of the world and probably the most important city, the job prospects are good, the pay is good, if you haven't done it you should, there is so much going on that it is a great place for kids to grow up, the people are cool and extremely kind. (You will never have to wait, looking lost at the bottom of a huge flight of stairs in the tube with a pushchair - someone always grabs the front so you can carry it up. They won't look at you, or say a word, but you will never, ever be left there. That sums up Londoners better than anything, I think). It can be lonely initially and hard to meet people unless you are particularly outg.....oh yeah...Fritz...You'll be OK.
Do it.

I think it takes a lifetime to learn how to enjoy London fully. You may be too late.

Rockingdoc, I fear that if you live in Bromley it may take several lifetimes.

Do it. I did it for 2 years when in my mid-twenties and had a great time. I go back at least once a year. Be warned though that large eggs are appearing all over town, and God knows what will happen if they hatch.
