Broadband and old pc question..

Posted by: Steveandkate on 10 July 2004

My beloved mum wants to get broadband, but her pc is old - a celerion 1100(?) chip, 4x CD writer, 128 memory and 20 gig hard drive - will it all work, or should she think about a new pc, and if so, what sort of minimum spec... I may also use it (and pay for it) so nothing too exotic - her needs are very limited (OK, I suggested she get broadband so I can play, and am now looking at forking out for the new pc too...!)
Thanks, oh clever ones !

Hi Steve and Kate,

my aged dell laptop is a pentium 2 366 with 128meg, 6gig hard drive and works fine for broadband.....a major gain compared to 56k!!
I use it mainly for e mail and surfing, but don't tend to download too many movies or mp3s etc.
We've just got bt broadband installed in the new house - 527k connection speed, free modem/switch filters for your phone line - no separate line required and you can still use the phone while surfing (your bb uses a higher frequency) all for £19.99 a month. There is a limit to how much you can download a month - 1 gig, but for the 'average' surfer this is plenty.....

It's definitely cheaper than a new pc, and you can always see how she goes first before considering an upgrade.....

All the best,

Ali

Ali,
You may have saved me a few hundred notes...
An instant reply as well - I love this forum at times..!
Mum will only be downloading pictures of my kids, but I expect I will manage to find a little more to do - I use a mobile for internet access ( I live in southern Spain) so have very limited access, and even a post like this will take a minute or two, and cost some..
Hence, my maybe unfair encouragement to get my mum to convert - I am back in London most months to work, and fill a few cd's with downloads...!
Cheers !

No worries Steve....

Broadbands great! Once you've had it you'll never want to go back......If your mum goes for it Spain will be a pain!

We've had it out here off shore for some time now - Nightshift has never been so much fun....
