upgrade CDS1 to CDS2

Posted by: Uwe Supper on 05 December 2000

Hi all,
I AM sorry to start this topic again, I know for certain that this has been discussed on the old forum, but did someone keep, by any chance, the old archive files about this upgrade (cost, what is done exactly, etc.)? If this is case, could you please e-mail me privately? Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Uwe,

basically, you send the head unit and Burndy back to Naim, and hang onto the power supply.

They gut everything out of the head unit and build a full-blown CDS-II from scratch.

The CDS-II has a different pin-out from the CDS-I, so the Burndy is rewired as a CDS-II/CDX cable, but with CDPS pinout at the other end. You MUST NOT use a standard CDS-I Burndy with the new combination.

It has been stated that this player is identical to a new CDS-II (although the CDS-I plastic lid still has a metal strip across the back).

You will need to check with Naim on costs.

For info, the CDPS (with modified Burndy) can also be used with a CDX, so it would have some resale value if you wanted to move up to an XPS later. I paid £600 for one with black Burndy from a dealer - half or less what you'd pay for a 2nd hand XPS.

I haven't tried it directly against CDS-II/XPS but it performs superbly.

cheers, Martin
