Wasps eating garden furniture

Posted by: bob atherton on 08 July 2004

Last summer I noticed during the course of my work as an architectural photographer wasps tucking into hardwood garden furniture. I mentioned this to my partner and Debs said that she had never seen this.

Within a week of mentioning this wasps were enjoying a veritable banquet on ours. A walk in the garden this morning after the rough weather of last night clearly highlighted the damage. There is an almost zebra like appearance to the surface.

Does anybody know if there is a ‘wasp proof’ oil that we could treat the furniture?

Ronseal now do a specific "Garden Furniture Oil" which seems to have a bit of varnish (polyurethane?) mixed in. This gives a tougher, and I suspect less palatable finish than conventional teak oil. It is fairly unpleasant to apply, but I have been very impressed with its resiliance.
