So the poll gives me a choice between "Hysterical Daily Mail style over-reaction to a minor incident that will allow the actions of a tiny minority to ruin the enjoyment of most of the nation".

And "Follow the sensible advice of the man from UEFA who said 'From our perspective we view it as unrelated to the tournament. It is not being viewed as football hooliganism by Uefa [but] the sort of problems that might be encountered in any busy beach resort where people have been drinking too much."

Hmm, tough choice.

The flags on cars are the opposite of the Starbucks indicator of the wealth of the locality - ie the more Starbucks shops the wealthier the the ara.

The more cars with flags and the more flags on cars then the more impoverished the locality.

I just drove from Harringay, where I live (cheap) to Muswell Hill where I cannot afford to live (very expensive), and the flag-incidence rose the further I got.

Mind you, about 75% of the people round me are Turkish. It's a riot when Galatasaray play Arsenal I can tell you. Literally.

Don't ban the team from this tournament. Then the thugs win.

I propose that UEFA / FIFA could ban the team from the NEXT tournament.

English Tourists abroad dont require football to get pissed and cause trouble. They do that even when there is no football.

So why punish the England team for the actions of the brainless twits who cause the trouble?

As England fans are actually Britons then we should ban Scotland and Wales instead.

For obvious reasons this ban would have little practical effect.

There's never any trouble at the actual matches as they are too well policed. You have to go through police background checks and all sorts to be able to join the Offical Supporters club and buy tickets. And most of the known and convicted hooligans (like several 1000s) have been prevernted from travelling at all.

Meanwhile there are some 60,000 English tourists in Portugal for the football. Of these 59,000+ are perfectly normal people (indeed I know many of them). There are a few hundred half-brained thugs who have gone for a fight. These people would be getting drunk and having a fight somewhere anyway the football just means they are all in one place so you notice it more.

It's essentially impossible to stop this from happening. As quick as you lock em up a new batch of idiots creeps out of the woodwork and start teh cycle again.

FWIW The Germans, Dutch, Italians, the whole of Eastern Europe and The Turks all do this as well -- indeed the Turks have a far worse problem and they have football related murders every now and again. World leaders though are are the Argentinians and River Plate / BOCA Juniors matches are essentially urban warfare.

BTW, There was a famous incident in during Euro2000 in a town called Charlesroi. There was brawl asnd some chair throwing in the town square with some 100 or so England fans, the police drove in a water canon and flatenned them all with a few thousand gallons of water. It was all over in about 7 minutes, the media went wild and showed the same 30 secs of footage over and over again. Apart from the local Charleroi paper which had the headline "Riot? What Riot?".

On the same night, LA Lakers fans rioted for several hours after the Lakers lost a home playoff game. There was a night of cars being over-tunred and torched, shots fired, stabbings, etc. etc. It was barely reported outside of LA and was forgotten within a few days. Go figure.

Well that helps me understand better. The world needs to round these people up from Rome to LA and make them, well- Raiders fans. They'd fit in perfectly.

Oh, and speaking of the Lakers...

The media seem determined to try to get England banned from the comp, rather than do out like a damp squib in the first round. This was lead story on many of the days news bulletins . A bit of rough and tumble in one bar at 2:00am in the morning 300 miles from any England match.

We had a recent thread about City centre violence a few days ago, there are 50,000+ English, plus no doubt thousands of other Brits, Dutch, Germans etc on the Algarve at the moment, of course there is going to be the odd fight, especially with TV crews just waiting around egging them on.

It's the same old story. After decades of this, it still hasn't been stamped out. Once again - ashamed to be English. I'm sure I would follow football if this side to it could be removed, but as it would associate me with being an English supporter, then I won't watch it. So the few have ruined it and I am letting them win, right? OK, if you like - they win. Fuck it.
Maybe the FA should bring about civil cases against the individuals for threatening the future of their business.

Even if FIFA/ UEFA decided that they would ban England from the next tournament (Germany 2006??) I can still see a handful of Hooligans travelling to Munich etc just for a ruck EVEN if England are not there.

I think these people love to fight and 99% of the time don't care about the football.

Information I did not have, why is this not reported by the usual news sources? I have not seen any headlines report the huge fight that must of occurred between the Dutch and German fans who have a very strong history of disliking each other. I also do not believe the Netherlands restricts who can attend football matches or even travel to a country where a tournament will take place in the way the English have to. It appears that any trouble around a football tournament centres on English people in the area. If it is not football related it is still a telling indictment of the English on holiday.
