Computer question about Adobe

Posted by: BigH47 on 11 January 2005

I have upgraded from Adobe pdf viewer 5.x.x. to 6.x.x the problem is that clicking on a pdf file on a webpage just produces a small icon and a "done" message.I can "save target as" and open the .pdf file OK.
Any ideas as to why it does not open the Adobe viewer directly?

Take it we're talking Windows and IE here? Which versions?

I'd probably do a clean boot into safe mode, go straight into Add/Remove Programs and remove any versions of Adobe Acrobat that show up in reverse order (i.e 6 then 5).

Make a note of any files that the uninstaller tells you are left via the details button at the end of the uninstall.

I'd then delete the c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat Reader folders, and reboot and try re-installing Reader 6.

If that doesn't work there are widgets that you can use to enable/disable various BHO (browser help objects) within Internet Explorer, those might help but I think that's the next step really.

Thanks Paul. Sorry as usual forgot the details XP and IE6. Reading what you say reminds me that I just loaded adobe 6 straight over 5 not updating 5. I thought it was OK as it seemed to put 6 in the same place 5 was.
I hope to have a friend over in a couple of days he knows about these things.
I might try what you suggest in the mean time.
I just had a look in Add/remove progs and it only shows adobe 6.x.x.
Should I remove it and then re-install do you think?

Hmm.. shouldn't do any harm.

I would still do it from safe mode just to be sure though. As I said, when you uninstall it, at the end of the uninstall it will either say "OK" or "OK" with a "Details" button - if you have that button click on it and see what it says was left behind, then delete whatever it says (usually it's all in the Adobe Acrobat Reader folder).

Then reboot again (probably not necessary but it won't hurt) and try re-installing it and see what happens.

Problems like this can be a bit of a sod, they fall into what I'd call the "30 seconds when you're sat in front of it" category but over the phone or forums like this they can drag on a bit.

Actually whilst I think, I'm pretty sure they're onto Reader v7 now - may be worth trying that after uninstalling v6?

cheers,
Paul

Finally got some sense out of the Adobe web site!
Followed an FAQ on IE problems and it lead me to try :- Control Panel Add/remove progs click Adobe and then Change . Follow instructions for Repair and hey presto it works as it should. More luck than judgement but hey! Looks like I missed or it missed something in the installation.
