Seasonal Aspect of Music (no, not a Christmas thread)

Posted by: bhazen on 06 December 2004

I got bemused looks recently from friends when I stated my feeling that different music has seasonal connotations. I was wondering if anyone here felt the same way; for example:

The Beach Boys (obvious I suppose) Pet Sounds, the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, Nick Heyward From Monday to Sunday, Pink Floyd Atom Heart Mother, the Moody Blues Days of Future Passed, XTC Skylarking, the Hollies Greatest Hits, Getz-Gilberto Getz-Gilberto: sunny-day, Summer music. Lemonade-drinking music.

Nick Drake Pink Moon, King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King, the Beatles The Beatles (the "white album"), XTC Nonsuch, Pink Floyd Animals, the Moody Blues On the Threshold of a Dream, Bartok String Quartets 1-6: Autumnal and/or grey, rainy-day music. Coffee-drinking music.

Now, some of this may be due to what the weather was like the day I first heard whichever album; but, I also think some music has a definite seasonal affect. I also will tend not to listen to the Beach Boys in the Autumn nor listen to Pink Moon on the way to the beach in August; The mood will seem wrong.

Discuss.

Many do! Winker I'm always tickled when in downtown Seattle in the hottest part of the summer and see Goth kids with pancake makeup on and long black overcoats.

During the oppressively hot summers where I live, I find myself listening to a lot more noisy post-rock (Unwound, Royal Trux, Bastro, Shellac -- that kind of thing). This helps me to block-out the heat and the sluggishness it induces.

For the rest of the year, I just play Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" over and over and over.
