Classical history

Having now accumalated a moderate collection of classical music (ancient to modern, 300 odd disks) it would be useful to tie it all together and so would be interested in any recommendations on some reading material on the history of classical music and how it evolved.
thanks

Matthew,
Whole generations of BMus students in Cardiff have used
this to help them through their degrees.
This is reasonably comprehensive and not too difficult for the lay person (if memory serves).
Good luck

The Rough Guide to Classical Music is pretty good. I have the third edition costing £14.99, published 2001, so there may be a new one around. See
www.roughguides.com for details, apparently.

Matthew,
The Vintage Guide to Classical Music - Jan Swafford, is worth reading. A mid weight look at classical music.
