Windows SP2 & Canon printers

Posted by: toad on 07 November 2004

Hi guys,

Has anybody experienced problems printing after installing Windows SP 2?

My printer (Canon MPC 200) won’t work with SP2 installed – as soon as I remove SP2 it works again. In Printer properties the printer shows correctly as being connected to a USB port , and it is enabled. When trying to print, I get an “Unable to communicate with device” message.

I have reinstalled the Canon drivers and software, been through the Windows troubleshooter, tried printing from different (non-MS) programmes, tried a different USB port, all of which makes no difference. The only thing that works is when I remove the SP2 update.

Does anyone know a simple remedy to allow me to keep SP2, and have the printer functioning? Simple answers please – I may be thick, but I’m not clever.

Thanks, Kev.

Guys,

I managed to fix the problem via the patch. It was a bit convoluted as firstly you have to undo settings that SP2 imposes – blocking of downloads etc. I had previously checked the Canon website with no success for updates – good to see they’ve now addressed the issue.

Thankyou to Sean & Nick for pointing me in the right direction for the patch. Once again the forum provides an answer – we’re an awesome bunch when we combine our talents!

As an aside, why do we tolerate this level of complexity of operation in computers? It puts Naim pucks & BMW I-Drive in perspective doesn’t it.

Enough computers, I’m off to play my records. Cheers, Kev.
