headphones with 32.5 -- what works

Posted by: JamH on 29 April 2004

Hello,

I understand that the 32.5/SNAPS can drive headphones [not perfectly, but pretty good, and definitly better than the headphone output of a CD player]. I propose to feed it from the tape-output of an 82 [I will have to try to figure out the connections].

I am thinking of getting some decent headphones and I am considerring Sennheiser HD-650 ....

Questions ....

a) has anyone used / is using them with 32.5
b) any other suggestions for headphones ?
c) I don't want any solution that involves plugging and unplugging cables
d) how comfortable are the HD-650

Thanks ...

James

P.S. Currently I am using Sennheiser HD-435 but just from the headphone output of a Marantz CD-63. They are yellow [i.e. old] and cost about 30 dollar/euro at the time. Very comfortable.

Hi James,

The Sennheiser 650's are a very comfortable pair of Headphone. They also give one of the best sounds I have heard from a headphone, but may I suggest that instead of using your Naim pre-amp, that you invest ina adecent headphone amp and plug your CD into it.

I have a Creek OBH-21SE, which I use between my Marantz CD player and the Senheiser's.

How do they sound? Gorgeous!

There were some threads on wiring up preamps (62 for example) here or on PFM. Somebody replaced the balance pot with a headphone socket.
However, a non-surgical alternative is to make up an external cable to take the headphone socket from the DIN output that would go to a power amp. I'm probably going to go for that when I get around to it. I think it'll require a splitter arrangement to allow a power feed to the preamp. Of course, that feed implies a flat/hi-cap (or in my case maybe a 140 power amp).

Thanks .. glad to hear they are comfortable and will try to hear a set. Want to start with 32.5/SNAPS and then think about a dedicated headphone amp [naim option is very expensive as headline + hicap but if I really like the headphones may go that route, ideally really want to hear vinly too so can't just connect to CD player].

Thanks .. I checked them but I am wonderring will the HD-650 work with the 32.5/SNAPS i.e is there a big impedance mis-match i.e. does it work [if it works OK I can always upgrade]. I suppose I am really asking is the HD-650 hard to drive ...

Thanks again to both of you ...

It'll work well enough to make you wonder what a separate headphone amplifier would add!

'Big' Sennheisers are generally 300ohm impedance and conform to the IEC norm specifying a 120ohm source impedance. Basically, they are very easy to drive as headphones go, they just require a larger voltage swing than most; the 32.5 will do just fine on both counts. Don't be misled by the headphone websites that consider Senns 'hard to drive' - put simply, Discmen and the like will never source enough voltage from a single battery Wink

All the Sennheisers with circum-aural pads are very comfortable, and for long periods of time. They sound great, too, which is what it's all about. Adding a separate amplifier at a later stage may well be an improvement, but first find whether headphone use suits you, and whether the amount of use justifies a 'better' amplifier.

Dear Martin,

Thanks for advice ... I will investigate the Sennheiser HD650 some more.

They are probably overkill for my needs but I have never bought hifi and wished I had bought the cheaper model. I never make balanced upgrades -- I get the best item I can afford at the time. [Please don't mention stax !!].
