XP sp2 & missing toolbar buttons

Posted by: Coxybabe on 09 November 2004

Ever since I installed Service Pack 2 onto XP Professional, open programmes no longer have their relative icon button displayed on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. I am not even sure if I still have the notification toolbar as the little double dotted line to the right of the notification/start toolbar is no longer there.

If I have a number of programmes open art the same time, the only way I know what I have open and switch between them is by bringing up Windows Task Manager dialogue box.

Any help would be appreciated.

hi Patrick,

Thanks for you reply.

I have tried everything in the toolbar dialogue boxes to no avail.

Unlocking the toolbar makes the right-hand moveable border disappear: locking it again brings back the RH border but never the disappeared lefthand one.

I have got Microsoft looking into this but if the last time they tried to help is anything to go by, I don't hold out much hope. I have more faith in you guys out there.

Regards to all

I had a vaguely related problem last week which I cleared by booting up in Safe mode. I've no idea what actually caused it or eventually cleared it. All I know is that before Safe mode I had a problem, after Safe mode it was gone.

You may want to try that.

Log off (Start>Log off>Coxybabe) then log back in and they will come back. Its something to do with the start sequence doing too much at the same time with SP2. It doesn’t happen with really fast machines or when you are not running much in the system tray.

Hi London Lad,

Thanks for your reply, which was very much along the lines of Microsoft's suggestion of disabling the bulk of things during start-up, using msconfig.

Unfortunaely, neither suggestion gave me back my missing part of the tollbar showing the "open programme" icons.

My computer is pretty much top-spec and lightning fast, so I am not convinced that the problem lies in a speed issue.

I am on the point of uninstalling SP2 and starting over again but the problem will be all the various patches & fixes that MS have put out along the way.

Why can't Microsoft just get these things right in the first palce? Ho hum

Can you take a copy of the screen (press the print-screen button, then paste into a graphics app).

Clip the image so you just have the bottom bit of the screen (the height of the START button + a little more), and post it so we can really see what's going on.

If you can't post a pic, perhaps e-mail it, & I'll take a look.

cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,

2 screenshots of the missing toolbar buttons. The piccies of the screen were taken whilst there were 4 programmes currently open, none of which appear on the toolbar as is normal when an open programme is minimised. Notice also, there is no lefthand moveable dimpled slider bar.

Coxy,

when I click the link it says it can't find the file on I: (presumably the location of the file on your hard drive?)

Did you upload it via FTP to your webspace before you posted? (The hosting of pictures on this forum has had to be dropped temporarily due to service limits on the server).

Feel free to e-mail the pics if that's a problem.

cheers, Martin

Hi simon,

Your server - dial dot pipex dot com "blocks" emails from my server - tiscali dot fr, so I cannot send you the JPEGs.

The screenshots appear perfectly on the Naim forum and I am puzzled as to why you cannot see them. Do you have another email address that I can use/ If not, I do have a yahoo email address, which I am reluctant to use because of the shedload of spam that always seems to follow a visit there. However, needs must and all that.

Look forward to your reply.

Coxy,

I had a couple of glitches with the XP Service Pack 2 until, on Microsoft's advice, I

1) Uninstalled it

2) downloaded the version for computer professionnals ("version pour professionnels"), which is somewhere on the download site, and left the file on the desktop

3) re-started my computer in Safe mode, as suggested before ("mode sans échec"), which you can access by pressing the F8 button while the restarting the computer

4) Installing the Service pack while in that mode, and restarting in normal mode afterwards.

This solved my problems, and I think it may be worth a shot.

Don't worry about the previous patches and updates, as all of the important ones are included in the Service Pack. It is true, however, that if you have installed optional ones, they may not be included.

Dealing with Microsoft is so frustrating. I have to say, though, that last time I contacted the French helpline for the Service Pack 2 Update, and was quite pleasantly surprised : they were competent, and even pleasant !

Can you post the text of the error message (appropriately anonymised).

The pictures come up as a red "X" which means my browser cannot find the pictures.

I have right-clicked, and displayed their properties. The file name is showing as "file:///i:/toolbar.jpg". When you run this on your computer, it downloads the page from the web, then tries to display the pictures, and goes straight to your hard disc. When I display the page, it tries to go straight to that file on my hard disc!! , and of course it's not there.

You need to find some webspace, upload the pics to that space, and then link to them (the address will be HTTP: instead of FILESmile.

Do you have any webspace?

Alternatively, someone recently posted a website that can be used for hosting your pictures & linked to from anywhere.

cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,
I've sent you an email using my wife's yahoo account - hope you get the files and not just a link to my computer's partitioned hard disk.

The error message I get is as follows:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Put "Naim" in the title
Sent: 16/11/2004 07:16

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'MartinPayne@Dial.Pipex.com..' on 16/11/2004 07:16
None of your e-mail accounts could send to this recipient.
I get this problem with AOL mainly and with servers that AOL take a dislike to. We have the spam authors to thank for this, the word authors being used in the loosest possible sense.

I will try the Safe Mode option this weekend as it certainly can get past some problems. I'll let you all know how get on.

Thanks for all the help thus far.

CB,

it looks like you put two full stops after the e-mail address? There shouldn't be any.

cheers, Martin

CB,

e-mail received.

Your taskbar seems a bit different to mine - we obviously have some different options selected.

In case anyone else can help, these are the images:-

Exactly!!!

The little indented moveable bar just to the left of the 'FR' (french keyboard option) should have its double to the right of the little 'green man' icon (eBay turbo lister).

In between would appear (and used to appear before XP SP2) icons of all the open programmes on the desktop. The only way I can now switch between various open programmes is uding the ' alt + tab' shortcut.

This 'loss' of open programme icons is a frustrating problem and thus far, beyond Microsoft's ability to resolve. In any event, I have much more confidence in Naim Forum members than Microsoft.

I haven't gone down the road of uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 as I cannot find where the original 200 plus Mb download is hidden on my computer to be able to reinstall it.

Thanks for all the help so far.
