Another windows media player problem..

Posted by: Steveandkate on 10 July 2004

Call me stupid, as I guess I have done something silly, but having spent hours putting loads of cD's onto my computer, via WMP, stored as WMA files, I had a wonderful 'shuffle play' playlist - trouble is, I have now lost all my media library, so have nothing. The files are still all stored in 'my music' but how do I get them back onto WMP, and hence my playlist..?
Also, if I want to record them to my mp3 player, how do I go about converting them to mp3's or can I leave them as wma files (I have an iRiver hp140). Very basic explainations needed please...
Thanks !

Open up Windows Media Player

1. Click on Media library(Left Hand Menu)
2. Click on +Add on toolbar
3. Click on Add Folder and specify the My Music File.

It should then find all your music files

Or press F3, select "My Music Folder" from the first drop down list and click OK.

The iRiver can play WMA so there is no need (aprt from one annoying limitation) to convert them.

To copy them over, no special software is needed and your iRiver just works like a regular hard disk:

1. Connect your iRiver with the lead supplied.

2. A dialog should appear asking you what you want to do with the new device. The option "Open an explorer window so I can copy files to or from my device" (Or something like that) should appear.

2a. If it doesn't go to "My Computer" and you should find a new "hard disk" called something like "E: (HP-140)". Open this.

3. This is your iRiver and Windows Explorer shows you what is already stored there. You can add and delete stuff directly just like a regular hard disk.

4. Go to "My Computer" and find your "My Music" folder and open it. You should see a list of the artists/albums stored as folders in your music library.

5. Drag the files you want from "My Music" to your i-River. If you have a lot of music, Go make a cup of tea.

6. This will copy the files over and allow you to play them by browsing iRiver's folder menus but won't allow you to use the "Browse By Artist", "By Genre" feature. This feature requires you to rebuild the iRiver index -- which is easy enough but unfortunately doesn't work with WMA files, only with MP3. For this reason you might want to convert to MP3, depending on how much music you have ripped.

7. Alternatively, you can buy iRivium Explorer which has a number of advantages over the native iRiver integration. Specifcally it allows you to index your collection for all file types not just MP3 and it allows much better playlist support (which is essentially none existant on the iRiver).

OK, so I click on media library, and nothing happens. So I pres F3, get a window and select My Music folder and click OK. It tells me it is searching for files, and what the progress is. But there is none - after 3 hours, nothing has changed. Now what......?
And by the way, thanks to both Peter C and Matthew Robinson for your replies...

OK, now I have found a shortcut on my desktop with my entire playlist on it. Haing copied it into WMP, I get told that "Windows Media Player cannot finb the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, then the file does not exist at the specified location"
So, what path, and how do I sort it.
Many thanks from one sad man..
