My mate, Andy, has been trying to get me into them. I'm in total agreement that they're far far better than Evanescence (who are also OK). Nightwish do the whole operatic singing and dark sound thing MUCH better though.
I need to get some of their albums (they also have at least one super audio disc out - can't remember if it was DVD-A/SACD though).

I picked up their latest cd based on some reviews I had read. Very very good. Highly recommended
Music should be 'original' and played 'live'. No more overpaid Karaoke singers.

The comparison to Evanescence wasn't hint enough for you then?

After Alex's review I might just be tempted to get this, sounds like it could be great

It does drown out the sound of the hoover, so not all bad.
Who's the bloke with the dodgy voice in this band, why do they let him near the mic?

Well, I am sort of like Alex, always a sucker for giving a shot to a band whose music anyone sincerely and convincingly describes as kicking ass or worth checking out for one reason or another which I can relate to.
I grew up in North America (Canada), where listening to records before buying them is unheard of. The notion just amazed me when I came to Europe. It was in France, and I thought this was so nerdy and so unrock and rollish. Where was the sense of danger ? Where was the thrill of taking a chance and scoring big ? What about buying an album just because the cover looked cool ? (My first album, as a matter of fact, was bought for that reason : Rare Earth live, I hadn't the faintest idea who they where, but that army bag cover, I just had to have it ! Anyone remember that one ? Not a bad start, on hindsight). Anyway, it was none of that overcautious buying before you listen business for me. I bought on the strength of reviews, period.
When I moved to Switzerland, I still kept buying records in the same fashion. After having been disapointed one to many time (was it an Oasis album ?), however, I decided not to buy anymore unknown albums or artists without listening. It spared me some major disapointments, to be sure, but I eventually realized that taking this to far also resulted in my rejecting many potential sleepers or "grow on you" albums just because they didn't catch my fancy at the time of listening. No more waking up one day in love with an album which until then left you stone cold. Some of my best and longest loved albums where of that type. Not to mention the treacherous headphone effect : wow ! in the store, and a total letdown the minute you put it in the car stereo on the way back.
Now I do a little of both : some listening just to know where I am going in certain cases, just to sort out what I will definitely not like and what I may like, and some spur of the moment buying. And even if I listen, I take some chances. I don't wait to be wowed before buying. I also buy without listening, on the strenght of some -hopefully- discerning reviews. I just try to be more discriminating with the reviewers I trust !
Sorry for this insufferable digression. I guess my point was : in this case (Nightwish), you have whet my interest (I know very little about goth rock), but it will definitely be a listen first case !
