Help a chap doing a Masters degree please?
Posted by: Frank Abela on 22 June 2004
Hi,
A friend is doing a Masters degree in Communications. He's prepared a short survey and needs as many British people as possible to fill it in. It only takes a few minutes and it would really help him out. The survey can be found at:
http://ericsantucci.tripod.com/survey
Thanks very much to anyone who chips in!
Regards,
Frank.

Tell your friend that using a site that throws up 3 pop up ads every 10 seconds pisses people off!

Frank, could you post a summary of his findings/conclusions here in due course?
Bob,
Not only pop-ups but spyware too. My 'Spybot - Search and Destroy' went into a brief killing frenzy.

Hi guys,
Thanks very much for trying to help out. It's much appreciated. I mentioned the problem of pop-ups to Eric who claims that being a destitute student means he has to use a free CGI form-handling company who then need to recoup their costs by advertising. Eric has an alternative pop-up free site. Here's a snip from his response to me:
"This is the result of me being a student and trying to cut my costs by using a free CGI form-handling service offered by Tripod (who can offer the service gratis by placing pop up advertisements), rather than having people send the form from their e-mail address which they might find uncomfortable in terms of privacy. It could be pointed out to the people on the forum, however, that I have set up a second site which uses this latter method for people who are finding problems with the popups: http://esantucci.t35.com. On submission of the form, the user will be alerted that the data is being sent from their e-mail address, making it visible to me. If any user prefers this system to popups, they can use the alternative address. Another solution to popups, which, though definitely annoying, can be found on many other sites we visit every day, is the one I use: Netscape browser (versions 6+) or the Google Toolbar including popup blocker for MS Internet Explorer (http://toolbar.google.com)."
As to Spyware, that's really weird. It implies that Tripod would be at fault. I have asked Eric to warn Tripod about this, although my (limited) understanding of pop-ups is that they can't deliver/install software in this way. Still, if Jez's spybot filter went nuts, it's reasonable to assume it had a reason for doing so.
We'll see about the results, although I have no idea what the thesis is about. Incidentally, there are reasons for the group being British only, but knowledge of those reasons could bias the results of the survey, so they can't be put on here I'm afraid, sorry!

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'spyware', they were probably relatively harmless tracking cookies common to many websites. However I don't want anything on my PC without my express permission, harmless or otherwise.
One of my favourite sites, www.guru3d.com always has the latest drivers for graphics cards and other stuff but you have to be prepared for a shit shower of pop-ups and cookies.
