HELP - This forum/my pc

Posted by: MichaelC on 01 July 2004

Not being terribly computer literate could anyone explain why the forum is appearing on a white background whilst the topic/topic starter/replies etc/last post are appearing on a background of various shades of grey. The topic headings are also overlapping. I've obviously screwed something but what? And how do I correct it?

Sorry to be so dumb.

Cheers

You are not alone. The truth is out there.
Others are having troubles too.

Hi Michael

The forum has looked normal on my PC of late.

But.......... I have experienced it displaying in a weird 'text only' kinda way on a white background from time to time.

The reason for this, is the relevant 'cookie' getting corrupted. Delete all your cookies (if you know how) and log in to the Naim site afresh.

That always sorts my wonky display of the forum. If you have 'Norton anti-virus' use its built in 'Web Clean Up Tool'.

The 'Quick Clean' option, deletes all URL history, cookies and internet cache files.

Good luck.

I'm Text only here too - for 3 days.

It's not easy!

Also, the forum tells me I'm not logged in - but I am!

I can't logout.

Weird

The server has been very slow these days and search works about once a week.

I wonder if the text thing is DHTML interface dumbing itself down to fit into the reduced bandwidth or something. You could try switching back to the old interface (which is actually better) as I have never had the text only version.

Overall I get the impression that since the server crash the forum has not been what it was. It seems odd that Naim have not siad/done anything about it and I begin to wonder if perhaps they have decided to go ont InfoPop's budget bandwidth throttled service to save money?

"How does one do that Matthew?"

Log out, then log back in again and check the "Disable Advanced [sic] interface" option

Thanks Matthew...I can log in and out again now!

No luck with the interface though.

I thought it was just me!

Mine went wonky for about an hour on Monday morning, but since it coincided with an upgrade to XP from 2000 I'd thought it was just me.

One of the many things I tried was clearing the cookies. Not sure if that was what sorted it, or if it went back of its own accord.

It isn't you. Just sit it out and let Infopop screw it up again.

I wonder if the stylesheet goes AWOL from time to time?

That's the one at http://naim-audio.infopop.net/1/OpenTopic/,a,gcss,s,67019385,st,77019385,xx,odo/ip770193851.079108348E9.css for this page...

Its bollox on a Mac too, just to make you feel better.

Oh...and the search is currently out too!!

As NAIM are investing in a new computer system in the summer break, do you think it will extend to a new provider for the forum? This is pants,vBulletin seems more stable and has better features. Have no idea of the relative cost though.

BigH there is nothing in it. Its a very competitive market that infopoop may have led a few years ago but is now seriously lagging. This software is crap.

On a related note, I am very impressed with zerogains new quick reply box.

I do not know how you come up with such far out stuff that this is linked to us trying to save money, not so!, sorry Matthew.

We currently have service tickets out with infopop, they are looking at various problems. On total balance we are very happy with what we have here.

Presumably the problems were/are related to the format change that seems to have happened overnight. It's not massively different visually, but I imagine moving things around under the skin involves much code changing and testing and so on.

Until yesterday I'd never had a problem, and even the reversion to Times and limited formatting was still navigable. One thing to note is that when replying, it does not now use a new pop-up window. Well, for me anyway.

I'm no expert, and not a visitor to many forums, but this software is as good as any I've come across and a great deal better than some (including some of the BBC boards)

Well it was OKish apart from the error message bleeps as the screen was drawn - now it is back in text mode with no boxes etc etc

Paul S. We are all glad you guys are pleased with it!

Check out you competitors they are better, is this an acceptable situation?

"On total balance" You missed the balance bit!!
things need to improve and we are confident so far that infopop can deliver a long term stable platform for our forum.
I have looked at the other suppliers, they seem ok but nothing special.
It is a much better solution to work with infopop to move forward, after all we have all this history now.

Funny text only again!

Back to normal.

I shall retreat into my blissful ignorance.

On the subject of this forum and Infopop we should all remember that this is a free service provided by Naim. Let's be thankful for that whatever the shortcomings of Infopop.

Cheers
