When I started with a 3.5/Flat/102/NAPSC/140, everyone around me thought it sounded amazing. Although I was pretty happy myself, it still had too many "Cringe Factors". (It was a bit too intense, it couldn't play as loud as I wanted, it was somewhat bass light, etc.) So I started upgrading, and I finally came to my current CDX/82/2*Hi/250.
At this stage, I almost never cringe, and I'm basically happy with the system. Therefore, I'll upgrade certain bits only if a deal comes along.
In this case it was a used Super-Cap. That by itself wouldn't have clinched it for me (because of the house thing and such). The deciding factor was that the seller of the Super-Cap lived within 25 minutes of a consulting customer of mine, who happened to owe me a little bit more than the price of the Super-Cap.
Although this customer is generally good at paying up, there was one project for which he hadn't reimbursed me for almost a year. I wasn't upset, though, since I knew that he would eventually pay, and I hadn't "needed" the money yet. I figured that if I asked him to pay the Super-Cap guy, the slight added pressure would make him cough up the dough. I was right.
BTW, Vuk is also right. The benefits of an XPS for a CDX are great. However, a Mana Reference Table boosts it almost as much. In fact, for half the money of an XPS, I can put Mana under my entire system. I'll probably end up doing this later this year (once I've settled into my house and got a bit of money saved up).
I still do intend to get an XPS, although I'll be hard pressed to find one used. Coincidentally, there's a fellow here in Canada selling a CDX/XPS combo right now. If I weren’t in the middle of this house thing, I would have definitely offered to purchase his XPS. Oh well, I may end up having to purchase a new one in the next year or so.
I've recently acquired a Rega Planar 3 with a Dynavector 10X4mk2 so I can spin a few platters. Although this is certainly a secondary source, the Super-Cap will benefit it along with the CDX. I can also sell my Hi-Caps and put the money towards my house. It's a good thing, all around. Catch you later!
