My wife gave me a Super-Cap for Xmas!!!

Posted by: Mike Hanson on 06 January 2001

I know I'm constantly bemoaning the fact that my wife doesn't appreciate my stereo/music obsession. However, this Christmas she showed that she does occasionally pay attention to my "needs". To this end, she got me a Super-Cap!

More specifically, she made me a Super-Cap. It's a hand-embroidered baseball cap, with "Super-Cap" on the front and the Naim logo on the back. Here are a couple of good pictures of the hat (and terrible ones of me red face ):

She was actually arranging to present it in a bonafide Super-Cap box, but the fellow from whom she was supposed to get it needed it at the last minute. Before attempting to source another, she realized just how cruel it might be to get a Super-Cap box filled with a mere hat accompanied by a few hefty bricks. As it is, it's one of the best gifts that I've ever received. smile

Ironically, I ended up acquiring a Super-Cap last week, so now I've got two!!! big grin BTW, sorry for delaying almost two weeks to post this message, but our camera's been on the blink. We just bought a crappy digital one (Kodak DC3200), just for this type of thing. Merry Belated Xmas to one and all! Catch you later!

Mike Hanson,

I'm sorry to be cruel (or nasty) but if your wife made just a beatiful hat, doesn't she want something from you - or maybe she had bought something very expensive for herself and didn't tell you yet ?

If I were you I couldn't sleep for the next few weeks... wink

P.S I do hope members know when to relate me seriously - rarely indeed !

Although my wife didn't give me the Super-Cap, I did get one last week (a day or two before the house deal closed). It was just coincidence, though; I don't normally spend that much money in one week. wink Catch you later!

Vuk,
If it sounds like it looks - I wouldn't touch it with a stick!

When I started with a 3.5/Flat/102/NAPSC/140, everyone around me thought it sounded amazing. Although I was pretty happy myself, it still had too many "Cringe Factors". (It was a bit too intense, it couldn't play as loud as I wanted, it was somewhat bass light, etc.) So I started upgrading, and I finally came to my current CDX/82/2*Hi/250.

At this stage, I almost never cringe, and I'm basically happy with the system. Therefore, I'll upgrade certain bits only if a deal comes along.

In this case it was a used Super-Cap. That by itself wouldn't have clinched it for me (because of the house thing and such). The deciding factor was that the seller of the Super-Cap lived within 25 minutes of a consulting customer of mine, who happened to owe me a little bit more than the price of the Super-Cap.

Although this customer is generally good at paying up, there was one project for which he hadn't reimbursed me for almost a year. I wasn't upset, though, since I knew that he would eventually pay, and I hadn't "needed" the money yet. I figured that if I asked him to pay the Super-Cap guy, the slight added pressure would make him cough up the dough. I was right.

BTW, Vuk is also right. The benefits of an XPS for a CDX are great. However, a Mana Reference Table boosts it almost as much. In fact, for half the money of an XPS, I can put Mana under my entire system. I'll probably end up doing this later this year (once I've settled into my house and got a bit of money saved up).

I still do intend to get an XPS, although I'll be hard pressed to find one used. Coincidentally, there's a fellow here in Canada selling a CDX/XPS combo right now. If I weren’t in the middle of this house thing, I would have definitely offered to purchase his XPS. Oh well, I may end up having to purchase a new one in the next year or so.

I've recently acquired a Rega Planar 3 with a Dynavector 10X4mk2 so I can spin a few platters. Although this is certainly a secondary source, the Super-Cap will benefit it along with the CDX. I can also sell my Hi-Caps and put the money towards my house. It's a good thing, all around. Catch you later!

Mick -

1. Vodka is a great drink (especially when drinking it after it was a day or two in the freezer) so don't blame it.

2. But I get the idea, this evening I'll try to look at Vuk's picture via a bottle full with vodka - maybe I'll see what is in the picture.

Sorry, but a Mana Reference does not boost the performance of a CDX nearly as much as a XPS. Not even close !

Cheers,

Bob

I would say that the Reference Table improves the CDX approximately 60-80% as much as an XPS. When you consider that I can put everything on Mana phase 2 for half the price of an XPS, and that it will boost the performance of everything by that amount, I would think the end result would be pretty darn respectable.

Even my wife admitted that the CDX sounded a lot better on the Mana than off. For my wife to notice it enough to comment, it must be bloody obvious. Catch you later!

Mike,

Great news about the SUPERCAP. I wondered whether your wife could make one for Naim to provide free with everyone sold. I would certainly wear mine with pride!

Nigel

P.S. you definitely want to get your hands on that XPS.
