Verve Master Edition half price! Any suggestions?

Posted by: Willem van Gemert on 23 August 2004

Dear all,

I just noticed that the Verve Master Edition series is sold half price in Germany (not sure if it's the case elsewhere). E.g. www.jpc.de sells the albums for 7,99 EUR (5,40 GBP) each.

Although money is tight actually (I moved house in June), I can't resist such an offer!

Do you have any suggestions what CD's I should order definitively?

I already have the following titles:

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Ella and Louis
Kenny Burrell, Guitar Forms
Bill Evans, Conversations with Myself
Bill Evans, Further Conversations with Myself
Erroll Garner, Contrasts
Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd, Jazz Samba
Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Getz/Gilberto
Stan Getz, Focus
Charlier Parker & Dizzy Gillespie, Bird and Diz
Billie Holiday, Songs for Distingué Lovers
Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery, The Dynamic Duo
Oscar Peterson, Night Train
Oscar Peterson, We get requests
Oscar Peterson, The Trio: Live from Chicago
Oscar Peterson, Very tall
Oscar Peterson, The sound of the trio
Tony Scott, Music for Zen Meditation

For a list of the whole series check out Verve.

Ciao!

I can recommend Johnny Hodges With Billy Strayhorn & The Orchestra.

I use eBay.com. I believe that the U.S. editions have better quality.

For example we auditioned the U.S. and the Europian versions of Nora Jones "Come away with me". The first one offers better quality.

Oscar Peterson Trio with Lester Young is a lot of fun. Great version of "Two to Tango" at the end.

"Sound of the Trio" is one of my all-time favorites. How is "Live from Chicago"?

Thanks! I had done some research on the internet and this was one of the CDs I had noted. For me the sound quality of the European pressings is sufficient, especially now that I can get them for such a good price!

If you like Oscar Peterson, you will like "Live from Chicago", but I'm not sure it's a must have disk. I have not listened to both CDs in quite some time, so I can't tell you for sure. I will try to have a listen one of these days and let you know.

Ciao!

Thanks for letting us know about this. I think I'm going to check it out.

I can confirm, these are all excellent albums.

Since I don't know if this is a temporary or permanent offer, I just ordered 25 CDs (my wife will kill me!).
These are some of the titles I ordered:

Count Basie, April in Paris
Louis Armstrong, Louis Armstrong meets Oscar Peterson
Sarah Vaughan, Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown
Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Quintet, You 'n' Me
Lester Young, Laughin' To Keep From Cryin'
Dizzie Gillespie & Stan Getz, Diz and Getz
Coleman Hawkins, The Genius of Coleman Hawkins
Wes Montgomery, Bumpin'
etc.

It seems the CDs are on stock, so logically I will have them somewhere next week. It will take some time to listen through all of these CDs, but I will let you know my impressions.

Ciao!
