The Mojo Guide - Recommended

Posted by: bhazen on 04 December 2004

I love books about popular music, particularly about albums ("100 Great Albums of the Sixties", "Rolling Stone Album Guide"); I must commend Mojo magazine (UK) for a book I just bought entitled "The Mojo Collection (third edition)", edited by Jim Irvin & Colin McLear. It comprises 1-page articles on albums released since the beginning of the format, more than 700 in fact. Some you've heard of, some very obscure, it makes fascinating reading and a great way to get suggestions of albums to help complete your collection. Even has information on whether a particular album has been released on CD, and, if so, the catalog # is included. It's not elitist either; the Velvet Underground co-exists with Bread, for example.

I've always been impressed with Mojo, as they seem to have a great sense of the importance of the history of pop music, as opposed to just focusing on the trendy and new. In fact I wish the US had a magazine like it! (Mojo costs a fortune at newsstands here...)

Can't begin to count the number of new (to me) bands I've discovered using this book. I bought it about 4 years ago and read it avidly.

Everytime I read about an album that I thought sounded interesting I turned the corner on that page and then turn them back when I buy it.

The good thing about the book also is that rather than being a book of album reviews which could be quite dull and biased, these are short essays on the story behind the making of each album.

Fantastic. Get it for Christmas.

Just come from Amazon - one reader gives it a 5-star thumbs-up while another says it's a load of opinionated poo - sounds like this forum!

They're both right; it's still a wonderful book though.

Well, if it's a comfort to you, American magazines is very expensive here in Europe.

It's not; but the UK/Euro mags are better, so you still come out ahead! Winker
